I thought the main point was that it is not at all uncommon for a candidate to lose his home state, although it has become quite a bit less frequent in modern times. Going from 1972 to 2000 without anyone losing their home state was the longest such streak in U.S. history.

I remember seeing this poll according to which Gore won in all the states where less than a certain percentage of the population (I've forgotten how much, it wasn't 50%) condemned Clinton's extramarital episode. There was one exception either way. Arkansans forgave Clinton but didn't vote for Gore. New Mexicans were the other way round

NM was extremely close though 366 votes i believe.
