The volatility in retail gasoline prices amazes me. There's a big truck stop in central IL that I drive by almost daily. On 5/11 it was at $3.04, on 5/14 it was at $3.24 and by 5/17 it was at $3.33. That's about a 10 percent jump in less than a week. On a 150 mile stretch of interstate yesterday the prices ranged from $3.23 to $3.59 for a gallon of unleaded regular.

In central IL gas was down as low as $3.03 today. However, it was $3.54 in the Chicago 'burbs.

I filled up at $2.87 in central IL today, but passed stations from $3.17 to $3.25 in suburban Chicagoland this afternoon.

Gas is up substantially this week. It's now ranging from $3.20 to $3.30, up from under $3 last week. Press reports attribute the rise to the continuing problems at the Whiting, IN refinery, plus the KS flood shutting down capacity there.

Recent pricing shows that the demand is largely inelastic, so supply sets the price. As Katrina showed, the retail market is very sensitive to production capacity.

It finally got below $3.50 in DeKalb out west of the suburbs. In the western suburbs near me I saw prices between $3.55 and $3.69.

The Chicago suburbs seem to have settled in the $3.65-$3.69 range going into the weekend. The city has some stations in excess of $4.00.

Though you can see from the GasBuddy chart that it's mostly in the upper $3.40's/low $3.50's around me, I was pleasantly surprised to be able to fill up in Pekin, IL on Thursday for $3.19.

Then you've had a huge change in 48 hours. Gas Buddy doesn't show much of anything above $3.11 in NW IN except for stations along Calumet Av (next to still expensive Cook county, IL). Gary seems to be mostly under $3.

I drove across country to MA this week, and I just paid $2.63 in MA today. On Tue in IL I paid $2.47, but the best in between was OH at $2.13 on Wed. The worst was $3.07 in NY along the Thruway.

What station was that?  Kickbacks are Us?   Tongue

Look at GasBuddy, most of them in town are down to $1.83 today. Tongue

Last Friday night I filled up for $1.55 at BP on Rt. 6 in Morris. Jumped up this week though. That $1.55 was the cheapest I have ever (at least remember) seen gas.

I drove through two days ago on rt 47, and the best I found, without a car wash discount, was $1.81 in Dwight, so I filled up there.

It's gone down a lot here, too. IL has a number of taxes on gasoline, but I filled up today and still only paid $1.609/gal = $0.425/L = 0.394 €/L.
