A former junior Minister for Agriculture in John Major's government.

He was first elected in 1987, replacing Reg Prentice who had retired. Prentice was a former Labour minister under Harold Wilson who defected to the Tories in 1977 after he was de-selected by his hard-left constituency party. He became a middle ranking minister under Thatcher too.
