This election means that Anne Northup is finished as a politician.

Good.

Daily Kos is reporting that 146,000 more voters voted in the Democratic primary than the Republican primary. Is this typically the case in Kentucky?

Well, considering there are nearly 570,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans, it seems highly likely more Democrats would vote than Republicans.

Turnout percentage was 22% for Dems, 20% for GOP.

I do not know how this compares to earlier Kentucky Governor's primaries where both races were contested.  Al might have numbers.

Anyway, I would caution anyone reading too much into primaries for general election results or "enthusiasm" to not do so.  Just a general rule of thumb.

Wonderful job at throwing away this race, guys.  Roll Eyes

Oh, and I love how the Fletcher faction of the KY GOP is getting so arrogant about all of this by now recruiting a primary challenge for McConnell. I can't see that one being close at all...then again, KY Republicans seem to be pretty stupid so they might just throw McConnell out in the primary...

What's the difference between losing with an incumbant unpopular Governor and losing with a congresswoman you had to replace the unpopular governor with? I would have voted for Fletcher.

My totals for the GOP primary are 73817 for Northup and 27058 for Harper

But the state totals are 73791 for Northup and 27084 for Harper.

Mainly because I flipped Carlisle and Pendleton's results

Alcon, some more corrections

You flipped Northup and Harper in Ballard County, and in Knott County

Northup wasn't as unpopular as Fletcher and we actually had a shot with her.

Why the whining, Phil?  Fletcher beat Northup with a superior campaign in all facets.

Even though I don't pay that close attention to Kentucky politics, what became apparent over the last two months is that Northup apparently believed that Fletcher's unpopularity would snag her the nomination without her really trying that much.  Sounds familiar to some post I'm reading above.

The simple fact was that in order for Northup to win, she had to show that she could win Republican voters outside Louisville, and her under 30% showing in those areas proves her effectiveness.

If some of Fletcher's people are talking about trying to take down McConnell, that's kind of funny because there simply is no chance of that one occurring.

I'm whining because it doesn't matter how superior his campaign skills will be in the fall. This race is over. He's finished.

They're seriously recruiting this former State Supreme Court Justice who also was the GOP nominee for Governor in 1991 and 1995.

Considering how bad Northup's campaign was, she wouldn't have done much better in November frankly.

If only I had a Tradesports account now. It actually gives only 40 odds to the Democrat winning.

Beshear is the most liberal candidate right? That's also good.

Compared to Bruce Lunsford and Steve Henry, yes. But not compared to Galbraith (the man who quite properly wants drug companies to pay for drug treatment programs).

Ok.  Big deal.  If Northup couldn't make it outside Louisville in the Republican primary, imagine how she'd fare with Democrats in the general election.

I don't think Forgy the Orgy ever was a supreme court justice. I don't know what he was before he started running for governor back in the '80s or '90s.

Forgy wasn't the GOP Gov nominee in 1991. He lost to Larry Hopkins.

And I don't think that Forgy was ever on the Kentucky Supreme Court. He did get his ass whipped for a spot on the court in 2000

The only reason why Forgy jumped to my mind is b/c 1) that's who I've reading on the blogs has been lambasting McConnell from the right of late; 2) there's a Draft Forgy website out there.

I was making sure we're talking about the same guy.

Elliot County is a good place. I love the 20 votes cast there-and not a single one for Northup!

Still not as good as Gatewood finally winning his home county (Nicholas County)

Yes

Are you talking about that perennial loser Forgy?

I don't think Forgy the Orgy ever was a supreme court justice.

I was going by what Politics1 has on the guy.

Forgy wasn't the GOP Gov nominee in 1991. He lost to Larry Hopkins.

I just said he was a candidate for the office (again, as Politics1 stated). He was the nominee in 1995, though, just barely losing.

Somebody better e-mail Politics1 and fix that mistake. If he never served on the court then this guy really is just a perenial loser.

That's the same guy. Politics1 ran a story on the draft website, connecting it to the Fletcher-McConnell rivalry.

2007 Kentucky GOP Treasurer Primary

Gotta love a map that uses 20 colors for 4 candidates, where the guy who finished first is the only one with an >80% map

And only 3 of 4 candidates were State House members. And they all won their districts easily.

It has been hard to take Politics1 seriously since their breaking news Larry Craig, Charlie Crist, and every other Republican they could think of were engaging in one big gay orgy.

The publisher's credibility has gone done a bit because of his recent editorializing but the site is excellent for keeping track of candidates and some of the latest news.

Compare and contrast that map with this:

http://ekb.dbstalk.com/TVMarkets/Maps/kentucky.gif

Lunsford sweeps the entire home TV market for Stumbo.

Richards does pretty well in his home market (Bowling Green) too
