First elected in the marginal seat of Woolwich West (later renamed Eltham) at a by-election in 1975. He held it for 22 years before going on the chicken run to Worthing in 1997. This was a sensible move as Labour's Clive Efford won by almost 11,000 that year.

He's a rare beast; a real dripping-wet moderate Tory during the Thatcher years, who boasts about being a union member (I think he's in the T&G).

Strangely enough he was once a member of (or associated with) the Monday Club, but I think even then he openly disagreed with them on many issues (e.g. immigration).
