Anyone? We have our first national election of a momentous year and not a peep from this board. Perhaps this is better described as an “election-type event,” with the opposition boycotting and preemptively claiming fraud, leading to a massive turnout collapse amid an ongoing political crisis.

I had no idea this was happening.
In any case, I'd be curious to see what Xahar has to say.

Two interesting things about Bangladesh:

(a) It has the World's longest border of any country;
(b) It has the World's highest population density in Dhaka.

As for the election:

Is that still true about the border after the major "tidying up" of enclaves/exclaves in recent years?

With Khaleda Zia vs Sheikh Hasina Bangladesh has arguably reached peak girlboss. A daughter and widow of founding fathers fighting it out for literally 40 years since they both became party chairs.

Even the leader of the third party "opposition" is a woman. Truly fitting for a nation liberated by the OG Asian girlboss.

Does anyone know what the deal is with the Jatiya Party? Are they an actual opposition or just a paper opposition party?

Is there anything we can take away from the results of this election?

It's quite shocking that in 2024 in one of the top 10 most populous democracies in the world that an election can be this uncompetitive.

It's not an election; it's an electoral-type event.

I think it was an ally of AL a decade ago when AL was in opposition but have since parted ways.  With BNP not running it is the only real opposition force.

Is this a case of the opposition not running due to genuine corruption or the opposition just unwilling to face their unpopularity?

Jatiya Party (Ershad)   11   (-15)
Minor parties 3
Bangladesh Nationalist Party 0 (-15)*
Independents   62

*boycotted the election

So increase in number of independents elected.

I think some of the independent winners are AL-backed independents
