12/05/07- Iowa finally decides to move its primary up to January 2, 2008. New Hampshire will hold its primary on January 14. With less than a month to go before the crucial Iowa caucus, the seven official Democratic and GOP candidates are seen campaigning nationwide. On December 10, a Democratic debate is held in Los Angeles, CA between the seven candidates. Obama and Edwards dominate, although Clinton performs relatively well.

12/15/07- Former Virginia Governor Mark Warner announces that he will not be running for President, but will challenge incumbent Republican Senator John Warner (however, John Warner has yet to announce whether he will retire or run again).

12/17/07- During a TV apperance, retired General Wesley Clark says that he will not be running for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Only former Vice President Al Gore has yet to make a decision. On the Republican side, former candidate Mitt Romney announces that he will endorse Fmr. Governor Mike Huckabee.

12/25/07- On Christmas Day, Clinton, Obama, Edwards, and Richardson are seem attending fundraisers or rallying supporters in Iowa and New Hampshire. Giuliani, Thompson, Paul, and Huckabee do likewise.

12/30/07- With 3 days to go before the Iowa caucus, final polling for the Iowa primaries comes out:

Democrats:
Edwards 25%
Clinton 25%
Obama 20%
Richardson 16%
Dodd 6%
Kucinich 5%
Gravel 3%

Giuliani 31%
Huckabee 30%
Thompson 16%
Brownback 9%
Hagel 9%
Paul 3%
Gilmore 2%

Everybody realizes that Iowa is a tossup for both parties- Edwards and Clinton are tied, Giuliani leads Huckabee by only one point. However, since the last IA polls, Huckabee has gained 4 points.

Next- Will Al Gore jump in as the train is already gone? Who will win Iowa?

02/02/08- In the South Carolina primary, Huckabee is defeated in an upset by Fred Thompson.

02/03/08- Sam Brownback refuses to drop out until after Tsunami Tuesday. He expects to come third or second, even first in some primaries that day.

02/05/08- Tsunami Tuesday for Republicans.

Huckabee surprisingly underperforms and Giuliani scores upsets in Missouri, Illinois, and California. Is Huckabee losing the momentum in the primaries? Fred Thompson wins his homestate, Tennesee with a large margin and does well in other Southern primaries.

02/08/08- One day before the Louisiana primary, Sam Brownback drops out and endorses Mike Huckabee. Chuck Hagel and Ron Paul will stay in for the moment.

02/09/08- Louisiana primary:

Huckabee 43%
Giuliani 39%
Thompson 15%
Hagel 2%
Paul 1%

Ron Paul drops out.

02/10/08- Maine's primary is held. Giuliani wins, although it is not a surprise.

02/12/08- Some important primaries are held in DC, Maryland, Minnesota, and Virginia.

02/19/08- After poor results in Virginia and DC, Chuck Hagel drops out of the race and endorses Rudy Giuliani. With Huckabee polling closer to Giuliani, it is clear that nobody has the nomination for now.

The map by the end of February:

02/03/08- Governor Bill Richardson is seen speaking to Senator Edwards and Obama that day. Rumors have it he will drop out.

02/04/08- A surprise announcement: Governor Richardson drops out and will hold out on any endorsement.

02/05/08- Tsunami Tuesday is here.

Clinton wins: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Idaho, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah.
Edwards wins: Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Missouri, New Mexico, Tennessee
Obama wins Illinois.

Next: On the Republican side...

02/07/08- Dennis Kucinich refuses to drop out for the time being.

02/09/08- While Clinton is minimally in the lead, Edwards is polling higher than before. Senator Barack Obama, although failing to win any states outside of Illinois polls quite well in numerous states.

02/10/08- Clinton wins in Maine, with Obama coming in second.

02/15/08- General Wes Clark endorses John Edwards.

02/26/08- February primaries are over. Clinton and Edwards, and Obama to a lesser extent, are still tied.

03/04/08- In seven primaries held that day, Senator Clinton performs relatively well although Barack Obama is doing much better.

03/08/08- Edwards wins Kansas in an upset, although Obama led polls in that state.

03/11/08- After Edward's victory in Mississippi primary, a Gallup poll showing two matchups are released.

Edwards 43%
Huckabee 38%
Undecided 19%

Edwards 42%
Giuliani 40%
Undecided 18%

Clinton 45%
Huckabee 37%
Undecided 18%

Clinton 41%
Giuliani 40%
Undecided 19%

03/13/08- With the nomination still relatively tied, it looks like Pennsylvania's 181 delegates will play a crucial role in the nomination of the Democratic candidate.

03/20/08- Polling for Democrats in Pennsylvania.

Clinton 40%
Edwards 38%
Obama 20%
Others 2%

Edwards and Obama invite Senator Clinton to an informal debate in Pennsylvania to be aired on national TV.

03/22/08- Clinton accepts the invitation. The debate will be held in Philadelphia and will be hosted by Katie Couric.

03/30/08- The Democratic debate is held in Philadelphia. Attendence is very high. Senator Obama arrives prepared with good knowledge of the issues, although he seems slightly less informed on international isses. Fmr. Senator Edwards does well, although many say Senator Clinton has slightly won the debate.

03/31/08- The last PA poll

Clinton 38%
Edwards 38%
Obama 22%
Others 2%

Next- who wins Pennsylvania and other April/May 2008 primaries?

April-May-June 2008 Democratic Primaries:

04/01/08- The crucial Pennsylvania Primary:

Edwards 37.5%
Clinton 37%
Obama 23%
Kucinich 1.5%
Other/Write-in 1%

Kucinich will not drop out and hopes for the maximum number of delegates for the Convention.

04/15/08- Former Vice President Al Gore endorses John Edwards in a surprise announcement.

04/17/08- There is speculation that Dennis Kucinich might consider the Green Party's nomination for President. Although he denies consideration, it makes sense to some political junkies.

04/19/08- Fmr. VA Governor Mark Warner leads polls for the Democratic nomination for Senator of VA in opposition to John Warner, who has yet to announce a decision on the 2008 Virginian Senate race.

04/20/08- Former President Pro-Tempore and Alaska Senator Ted Stevens announces that he will not be running for another term in the Senate.

04/22/08- The 2006 Democratic nominee for Alaska Governor, Tony Knowles, says that he will run for Senator Steven's open seat.

05/06/08- Senator Edwards wins North Carolina with 61%, but loses Indiana to Senator Clinton, who won it with 41%. Senator Obama took second place in both primaries. However, he would be very lucky to win any upcoming primaries with a decent margin.

05/13/08- Senator Edwards wins West Virginia in a surprisingly close race, taking 41% to Senator Clinton's 38%.

05/19/08- With only five primaries left, neither Edwards nor Clinton have the nomination solid. It looks like the convention will be a close contest too.

05/20/08- Active campaigning and a "populist" appeal leads to Edwards winning Kentucky by 4 points and Oregon by 6 points. Senator Clinton refuses to drop out in order to not face a possibly heated convention in Denver.

05/27/08- Edwards wins Washington with 52%. Senator Barack Obama is sliding down with only two primaries left to go before it's all over.

05/28/08- Senator Obama is rumored to have talked to Senator Edwards. The Obama campaign denies.

05/31/08- Senator Barack Obama drops out of the race and endorses Senator Edwards. If Edwards is nominated, it looks likely that Obama will be on his ticket.

06/03/08- Senator Clinton wins in Montana and South Dakota with 63% and 60.5% respectively. Senator Edwards announces that he will not drop out to give Clinton the nomination. The Denver DNC will be very heated.

03/04/08- Five states hold primaries. Huckabee wins three, including delegate-heavy Ohio, while Giuliani takes two smaller New England states.

03/05/08- Fred Thompson campaigns in the northern states with primaries in March and April, trying to spread his ideas.

03/10/08- With Huckabee polling well, TIME magazine's frontpage says Huckabee: The Republican Bill Clinton?.

03/14/08- Mike Huckabee announces that he will campaigning in all 50 states if he does win his nomination. His campaigning turns into a "communitarian" type of campaign and tries to seem like a populist.

03/19/08- Mike Huckabee stirs controversy when he visits the Creation Museum in Kentucky while campaigning there ahead of the KY May primary.

03/22/08- Rudy Giuliani says he is "alarmed" by Huckabee's controversial Kentucky visit.

03/25/08- Huckabee recovers momentum after he is endorsed by President Bush. Bush attends, along with Huckabee, a campaign rally in Colorado.

03/30/08- Fred Thompson drops out after a poor showing in MS and WA. He endorses Mike Huckabee. Only Giuliani, Hagel, and Huckabee are still in.

04/01/08- On the day of the Kansas primary, Chuck Hagel drops out and endorses Rudy Giuliani. Giuliani goes on to win Kansas.

04/15/08- Mike Huckabee wins Colorado with a 7 point victory over Giuliani.

04/20/08- Pennsylvania seems to be a crucial primary in this two-way contest. Two days before the primary, Giuliani is leading, but Huckabee is pulling ever closer.

04/22/08- Huckabee wins Pennsylvania 52-48 against Giuliani.

04/26/08- A poll in NC and IN ahead of their primaries on May 6 shows a huge lead for Huckabee. Giuliani's polling numbers nationwide go down.

04/29/08- Polling indicates that Huckabee has a huge lead over Giuliani nationwide:

Who would you want to be the 2008 GOP nominee?
Huckabee 59%
Giuliani 40%
Somebody else 1%

05/01/08- Unconfirmed sources say that Giuliani is seriously considering dropping out. He laters denies it.

05/05/08- A day before the NC and IN primaries, Giuliani says he will wait until the Nebraska and WV primaries on the 13th before considering dropping out.

05/06/08- Huckabee wins NC 61-39 and IN 62-38.

05/10/08- 56-44 win for Huckabee in Wyoming.

05/13/08- Giuliani's "crucial primaries" are held:
Huckabee wins Nebraska 53-47, and West Virginia 65-35. Although doing relatively well in Nebraska, Giuliani says he will talk to his campaign managers as well as Chuck Hagel, who is now on his campaign team about dropping out.

05/14/08- In a FOX News interview, Chuck Hagel says he does not believe Giuliani will drop out. He also confirms he will run for re-election in Nebraska.

05/16/08- Rudy Giuliani drops out of the race and endorses Mike Huckabee for President. Sources say that Chuck Hagel is shocked and dissatisfied and could perhaps get back in the race.

05/17/08- Chuck Hagel declines to get back into the race but will not endorse Huckabee.

06/06/08- Primaries end with Huckabee winning 98-2 in Hawaii against write-ins. Unless some unpredicted event occurs, Mike Huckabee will be the GOP candidate for the 2008 race.

Huckabee: 28 states
Giuliani: 20 states + DC
Thompson: 2 states

2008 Nominees

09/22/08- In the first Presidential debate, John Edwards and Mike Huckabee have a violent confrontation over the Iraq conflict. Although both candidates perform well, John Edwards is generally seen as having dominated the exchange and having a stronger knowledge of the issues on hand.

09/23/08- Joe Lieberman says that he is on the ballot in around 30 or so states but still has a "long way to go" before being treated as an "equal like Edwards or Huckabee". Huckabee criticizes Lieberman's "uncertain ideology" in the race.

09/25/08- A post-debate poll:

Edwards/Obama 47%
Huckabee/Brownback 39%
Lieberman/Easley 9%
Kucinich/Brown 3%
Others 2%

Confidence-

Tossup=<3% margin
Slight=<6% margin
Lean=<10% margin
Strong=>10% margin

Election Night Prediction-

Surprisingly, it looks like Huckabee could lose the popular vote 49-37 but still win the EV 274-264 with Ohio, although Huckabee's lead is narrow: In Ohio Huckabee has 42.5, Edwards 42, Lieberman 10, Kucinich 4, Other 1.5

09/26/08- After the poll's release, Edwards and Obama campaign together in Ohio hoping to capitalize their chances in that state, which, like in 2004, will decide the election.

09/27/08- Dennis Kucinich, campaigning in California, says that Bush should've been impeached since 2005 and continues to call Iraq a "useless butchery". He calls on John Edwards to show his true position on Iraq directly and invites Huckabee to "wake up on Iraq".

09/28/08- Suprisingly, Huckabee answers to Kucinich saying: "While I may not agree with how the administration has carried out the war till now, it's too late to walk out and we can't talk about a timetable for withdrawal until we've firmly established the Iraqi government as Iraq's sole government and destroyed Al-Qaeda in Iraq".

09/30/08- John Edwards, also getting wrapped up in the Iraq exchange sparked by Kucinich repeats that his vote authorizing the war was "a grave mistake that I regret now". Edwards calls for the approval of a timetable for withdrawal of all troops in Iraq by December 2009. Kucinich says that Huckabee has "illusions on Iraq" and says to Edwards "it's too late to regret in 2008"

09/30/08- After the Iraq exchange, a new poll:

Edwards/Obama 44%
Huckabee/Brownback 41%
Lieberman/Easley 8%
Kucinich/Brown 5%
Others 2%

This has been a pretty realistic scenario so far. However, I think Richardson would make more sense as Edwards' running mate than Obama would.

Remember the under-the-cover Edwards-Obama deal Smiley
