Since the other thread seems to have died, this one can be used for discussion about the UEFA 2008 tournament. We are only in the qualifying stage right now but that doesn't mean it is completely dull.

Going on right now...

17:42  First Half

Italy - 1  (by Inzaghi)
Faroe Islands - 0

Now let me go find a channel on digital cable that might be covering this...

And I just discovered that I don't have the soccer channel.  Sad   Let's see if it is worth purchasing...

Only $5 a month to see some great matches? I'm getting it as we speak. I should hopefully be able to see the second half of Italy.

Still 1 - 0.  Smiley

They're not covering Italy. I'm stuck with a real snoozer - Spain vs. Latvia and then the already played Germany vs. San Marino blowout. Roll Eyes

However, you can bet that I am staying up until 2 AM to watch England vs. Brazil (though it turns out that that game, too, has already been played and I just found out the result. Ugh...)

Really? Shocked

That's fun, it isn't the same without him.

Less than a week till the next round of qualification games now! I sure hope we can beat Denmark...a tie would be ok, but a loss could be it.
Well, it seems you'll get your wish. Still, I thought that Scandinavian football fans were a bit more composed and less violent.
Meanwhile, Bulgaria still could qualify as they seem to have remembered how to score - though they should work a bit more on consistency.

Scotland plays the Faroes on Wednesday. We are technically playing our neighbours in the north Grin

I think there last competitive win was against Luxembourg, who they beat twice during the qualification for the 2002 World Cup.

They win friendlies from time to time.

2-1 is a really bad result for the Italians. Against what is largely non-professional opposition, they really should do a lot better.

Apparently the worst loss in World Cup qualifying history was suffered by Faroe Islands. The score, you ask?

Australia - 31
Faroe Islands - 0

Surely not. Qualification for world cups is geographically based, so the Faroes and Australia would never be in the same qualification group. It's quite unlikely that they've ever played.

Australia do hold that record, though (IIRC) against American Samoa. (Might've been the Solomon Islands - I'm not certain.)

Hmmm...I was playing my Fifa World Cup 2006 PS2 game and they provide facts about a specific country before the game. I could have sworn I saw this during my Italy vs. Australia match. Maybe it was Australia vs. Solomon Islands. I'll look this up.

Sweden went up 3-0 early
Denmark evened it to 3-3 late
The referee awarded Sweden a penalty kick in min 89, a Danish fan ran onto the pitch and tried to hit him
The referee left the pitch and awarded Sweden a 3-0 victory from his locker room, so as of right now Sweden won, though I can't imagine the result will go unchallenged

Watch the video. After what the Danish player Poulsen did to the Swedish one this is OK:

First place in Group B (after yesterday's win against Ukraine).

The penalty is certainly justified but that doesn't mean that the game should have been called in Sweden's favor.

A) If Poulsen doesn´t have his emotions under control 1 minute before the game ends - The Dane´s problem.

B) If the Danish stadium officials can´t prevent fans to attack the referee - The Dane´s problem.

C) If the referee decides to cancel the game after he was attacked - The Dane´s problem.

D) If the higher body of the UEFA decides to award the game to Sweden, also bad luck for the Danes.

Justified for Sweden IMO. We agree here that we do not agree on this decision. Wink

A fan attacking the ref? Given that this was Fandel... shame he didn't have a knife at the ready. Grin [/still sore about ridiculous decisions in German 2006 cup final]

Ha ha, but seriously, it is quite scandalous that our officials were too busy watching the game and didn't catch that drunk idiot (not Poulsen, the fan. Poulsen should be banned from the national team permanently)

What does that have to do with anything? Award him the penalty kick and see what happens. It is not certain that he would score and win the game.

Uh, sure, but that doesn't mean that the game should be decided because of that. I believe in the players winning the game for themselves.

The game could have continued. The two were seperated fairly quickly.

That's bad for all fans, not just the Danes. I would hate to see Italy win that way.

Well true, it's Spain's (and NI's) problem as well.

But these are the refs' guidelines: in the case of a physical attack on the referee (by either a fan or a player), the game is to be cancelled.
