An Englishman representing a Scottish seat - there aren't many of them (though there are plenty of Scotsmen representing English seats!)
He first won this in 1983 and has held it comfortably ever since, apart from a near-death experience in 1992 when the Tories cut the majority from 9,000 to just over 200 votes.
It will be interesting, however, to see whether he faces a strong Nationalist challenge at the next General Election given that about two thirds of the seat is made up of Alex Salmond's constituency at Holyrood.
