For several months in 1968, Michigan Governor George Romney was the front runner for the Republican Presidential nomination.  He went to Vietnam, came back, and said he had been "brainwashed."  He withdrew from the race for the nomination shortly thereafter.

This statement was credited with his withdrawal from the race.

If he did not make this statement, and won the Republican nomination, how would the election between Governor George Romney and Vice President Hubert Humphrey have turned out?

What would a map look like?

Bit of a swing to Humphrey. Without the "Southern Strategy", Wallace gains some of the Nixon vote down south swinging TN and SC and KY to Humphrey.

Humphrey wins it

Yes, George Romney did make that statement.  My scenario, however, assumes that he did not make that statement, as posted.  In other words, how would the election turn out with Romney/Humphrey?

Remember, this is the 60's. Would that much of America be open to a Mormon?
