I would prefer anywhere in the northern mountains or along the northern coast.  Siskiyou County, Humboldt County or Del Norte County would be perfect.  Everywhere else is too crowded, especially LA, Orange County and San Diego.  The Bay Area is very crowded, but other than that it seems to be a great place.

The northern coast (in Marin/Sonoma/Mendocino only), though the Bay Area or low in the mountains east of Sacramento wouldn't be too bad.
