Looks like TX Dems will have to wait till 2030 to win the governorship then, unless Abbott becomes like a Bevin type figure.

Please. Even Scott Walker-like would suffice.

I think him running for a fourth term under a Trump midterm is the exact set of conditions where Democrats could finally break through.

Trump would never pick a "cripple" (probably his words) as his running mate.

Why doesn't he sit down and retire? My goodness, some people don't know when to quit. Four terms is way too many.

He could have a tough race on his hands.

At a certain point, people want change.

I think he will be vulnerable to a primary challenge, and could have a tough fight in the general depending on who the Democrats nominate and the national environment.

Not surprised by this, and if he wants a fourth term I think it's pretty safe to say he's got it. Could even see him going on for a fifth - after all he is far from the oldest incumbent governor.

After his stunt at the border, there's a 0% chance anyone succesfully primaries him. That really increased his popularity with the base.

Terrible news for Demcorats, not sp much because of Abbott, but because somehow running against Paxton or Patrick was their best bet.

Supposedly Paxton's trial finally begins in late April.

Supposedly.

Trump will pardon him and that’ll turn Paxton into a Republican martyr. Then he’ll predictably primary Cornyn out and then be the first Republican to lose a Senate race in almost 40 years. This has shades of Arizona 2018 all over it except unlike Arpaio, Paxton doesn’t yet have loser stench on him.

Wouldn’t Trump want him as AG?

Lol no way he’d get confirmed. Murkowski and Collins would never go for it.

If the GOP has 52 senators he should have the votes if there are no other defectors. The more seats they win the more room they have for error.

They could run on being even harder than him though.

This. Primary might get serious depending on who throws their hat in the ring. I think there are enough ambitious Rs in TX who might've been willing to bite their lips and wait their turns in 2022, but a fourth term will definitely be too much waiting for quite a few of them.

General will be a lock for Abbott if it's a Biden midterm, but if it's a Trump midterm, then it'd be a perfect storm and the right Democrat could absolutely win by billing themselves as a change agent.

I agree, but the phrasing of the first sentence, intentional or not, is wild.

If Abbott and Cornyn both run again, I wonder what the odds are that Abbott is primaried by Patrick while Cornyn is primaried by Paxton.

Governor's overstaying their welcome usually creates the best scenarios for the opposing party to win. Mario Cuomo & Scott Walker come to mind.
