Immigrant bill hurts Martinez in polls

The Florida Republican senator's approval ratings are at an all-time low.

Tamara Lytle | Chief Washington Correspondent
Posted June 8, 2007

WASHINGTON -- A new poll shows that U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez's approval ratings with voters have plunged to an all-time low, apparently reflecting his support for a controversial immigration-reform bill.

Only 37 percent of those polled by Quinnipiac University approved of the way Martinez was handling his job, while 34 percent disapproved and the rest were undecided. That's down from a high of 48 percent approval -- and 22 percent disapproval -- in February, before the latest immigration bill was announced.

I think he will be vulnerable - but the Democrats need a good candidate.  Florida could also seem harder to win in 2010, if there is a Democratic President in the White House who lost the state in 2008.

For Martinez to seek re-election would be a reprehensible mistake.

He was pushing the whole letting felons vote thing, right?

Newsflash to Walter - Don't always assume that someone (usually someone from the south) is a bigot because they might have second thoughts on someone.

For Martinez to seek re-election would be a reprehensible mistake.

What does he care? The man has no political future. Why not go for it?

I was on his website the other day and I get these moments where I think to myself, "Why is this person in the U.S. Senate?" It usually happens with Jim Webb and Jon Tester but I realized that Martinez is a perfect candidate for that question, too.

Jim Webb says what he thinks and seems like a decent guy and we need more people like that, Tester beat a crook, but they're there because they got the most votes.

I think the Democrats will wind up doing with the 2010 FL Senate race what the GOP did with the 2006 one

I was saying that I'm shocked everytime I remember that he is there because he should have never won. Allen threw that election away.

And I'm shocked everytime I look at Tester because he looks like he should be on some town council in the middle of Montana, not in the U.S. Senate. It's just something that we're not used to seeing and Tester acknowledges that.

I do not see the candidate being there and I see Florida becoming more conservative and Republican.  Also, I think Martinez has fallen now because of the immigration bill, but that is only a temporary blip and he will return to around 55% by election 2010.
