I'd prefer not to make a national holiday out of 9/11... It's enough of a cheapened spectacle as it is.

Holidays should focus on the positive, not the negative, IMO.

I highly doubt that 9/11 would be remembered as a "holiday" as much as it would a remembrance day.

Well, color me shocked that Michael Anthony Naso, Jr. himself supports making a memorial out of 9/11.

I think it borders on paranoia, myself.  What's the point of closing your shops on the day of the terrorist attacks?  To make everyone depressed?  People aren't going to forget that 9/11 happened, but I don't see a holiday to memorialize those who died in Hurricane Katrina.

I don't think the amendment is relevant enough to the bill and is something that should be its own bill.

As far as making Aug. 29 a holiday for Katrina, I think this is something that would be appropriate for the New Orleans area (I wish it had been one last year as there are several things I would have liked to have attended and couldn't because of work) but I don't think it should be a National Holiday.

Just like Memorial Day and Veteran's Day are not thought of as a holiday? Tongue

As important as the freedom to buy cheap Chinese imports is, I don't think it is an important enough civil right for us to be commemorating the day that the first Wal-Mart store opened.

I would prefer kids to be in school on 9/11 so that there teachers and principals can remind them of the day, the tragedy, and that importance it is never forgotten. The way Dr. King or the Preisdents are treated on their days is sickening. People "let freedom ring" on their alarm clocks two hours later, and that's how great men are remembered on their days.

I will vote nay.

Nay, since no explanation of why July 2 has been given.

The Civil Rights Act was signed into law on July 2, 1964.

If it weren't for Title VII of said Act, I might change my vote but frankly I feel employers should have the right to be stupid and use non-job performance reasons to select employees.  Title II is a little broad, but considering that people should be able to expect public accommodations to be available while traveling without having to make extra arrangements, and not being able to do so can be considered an infringement of Article IV Section 2 Clause 1, especially when backed by State laws, the situation in the South warranted that broad intrusion into the rights of proprietors to be stupid. Wouldn't say that entertainment venues should have been included within the meaning of "public accommodation" though.

Well, the proposal is not to celebrate the Act, but the cause of civil rights in general.  I chose the date because it would be an iconic date to the civil rights movement.

Aye. It's much more tasteful, and frankly more meaningful than the original bill.

If the amendment passes I will withdraw the bill.  This is ridiculous and an unprofessional practice

While your position is obvious, you still need to vote on the amendment.

I agree with the PPT that it is preferable that holidays should focus on the positive.
But, I also agree with Al that both are preferable to neither, which I suspect may happen if either one goes forward alone.
