But, I also agree with Al that both are preferable to neither

I don't see anything enticing about the original proposal whatsoever.  Borderline paranoia codified into a federal holiday is never a good idea.  Why should people not be able to go shopping on the afternoon of September 11th, 2019?  It's not like a terrorist attack is ever going to happen on the date of 9/11 again.  The only purpose is to fearmonger people into remembering to vote for an aggressive foreign policy.

Are you implying Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and other national holidays are inspired out of fear rather than observance?

I don't see how fear has anything to do with any of those.

There is a difference between appreciating our veterans or remembering those who have died in combat than directly memorializing a specific day solely because of a terrorist attack that occurred on that day.  Plus, it cheapens 9/11 as PBrunsel noted.

The Aye's are four, the Nay's are four and there are two abstentions.

As President of the Senate, I vote Nay on this amendment.

I would agree with Jas's amendment if that is the only to get 9/11 remembered as a holiday, however, I feel Civil Rights Days is something that is important as well and much better than the Fmr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Do we allow amendments to amendments (the real Congress does)? If so, I propose one to strike section 1 from DWTL's amendment.
