Various maps (and other stuff) to do with London (demographics, elections and so on) will be posted in this thread.

To start with, a sort of borough regions map:

All London: Con 42.1, Lab 36.6, LDem 17.1
LCC: Lab 42.9, Con 35.6, LDem 17.7
Essex: Lab 48.1, Con 29.3, LDem 10.5
North London: Con 40.1, Lab 39.7, LDem 20.2
West London: Con 54.1, Lab 36.6, LDem 5.1
S.W: LDem 43.0, Con 42.1, Lab 13.4
Croydon & Kentish: Con 75.6, Lab 20.7, LDem 3.6

These maps (at borough level) are based on a socio-economic classification done by the ONS. I've grouped ten into five groups of two.



St. is student, btw. The others are in descending order of social "importance" (if that's the best word to use).

How does one Define a "I", "II", "III", "IV", "V" Class type of person anyway....

Funny that the Bluest and the Purplest areas seem to be the most Liberal Democrat...

Presumably, where they're significantly stronger than Labour they mop up Labour strategic votes easily, which makes them stronger in wealthier areas where Labour is weak.

How does one Define a "I", "II", "III", "IV", "V" Class type of person anyway....

By type of employment. They are made up of the following NS-SEC groups:

I: Higher Managerial and Higher Professional (ie; upper middle class)
II: Lower '' '' and Intermediate (ie; the Daily Mail reading classes)
III: Small Employers & Own Account Workers and Lower Supervisory & Technical (what it says on the tin really)
IV: Routine/Semi-Routine (class blue collar occupations and so on... mostly anyway...)
V: Never Worked and Long Term Unemployed

I probably won't bother doing ward-level maps of three of these (Christian, Buddhist, Other) for a couple of reasons. At least not for a while. Ditto some others in some areas; not much point doing Sikhs in North London for example.

As for colours, some were obvious, some made sense after thinking about things for a little (Christian for example; thinking of the Last Supper and so on) some were more random.

Funny that I often associated London Jews with the East end.. or is that archaic?

What would be the predominant "Other Religions"?

It's archaic; Jews started to move out of Stepney in the '30's (for obvious reasons...) and also after the War. There are still little pockets here and there though.

A lot of the Jews in Ilford came from the East End IIRC.

Oh, yes... one other thing. It's likely that the Jewish pattern is a little misleading in areas with a lot of Secular Jews (and West London isn't one of those areas; I'd intended to add this note with the previous set of maps but forgot) for obvious reasons.

A lot of election maps will be up here at some point (going back quite a long way), but here's a little one for now:



Map shows % majority; the pink/light blue/light yellow is for majorities under 5%, everything works up from there.
