Condolences to the families of those who lost their lives due to lack of healthcare coverage.

May Lieberman be judged fairly in the afterlife.

Yeah I was shocked. I mean, the last we have heard from him, he didn't seem to be in poor health at all, so this fall must have been severe.

Somewhere in the Quiet Corner, a lone Connecticut for Lieberman Democrat hears the news on his AM radio. He shuffles out of his cabin, at last prepared to surrender to the local county chair.

Guess he won't be running on the NoLabels ticket after all. What a tragedy.

I think, as far as never-successful major party VP nominees go, there isn't anyone further back than John Edwards still alive.

Certainly a heavyweight of 2000s U.S. politics.

Dan Quayle? Al Gore?

Was successful in 1988.

Condolences to Lieberman’s family. Definitely one of my favorite Democrats and deeply respected him despite his differences with me on abortion. He stood up to his party when he thought it was necessary, advocated a strong foreign policy, advocated free trade, and he endorsed John McCain in 2008. He would have made a great Secretary of State under a President John McCain2’

Btw, you may not think Lieberman was a great VP pick for Gore, but know that it could have been SO much worse:

I have conflicted feelings on him.

He was a moderate and reasonable Democrat at the time when the Democratic Party began it's huge lurch leftward to nuttiness, but he was a neocon who supported the indefensible Iraq War.

He was the strongest Democratic candidate in 2004 and the most electable, but he was unable to project this into a winning argument for Democratic voters.

Had the GOP picked him as their 2008 VP candidate he MIGHT have gotten McCain elected.  McCain was the most popular Republican that year, and that was the consensus of most polls over time, but Palin was a horrible pick and cost him votes.

I considered him a decent man when he was in politics.  I don't know what I'd think of him today if he were alive, younger, and running.  I'll give him a soft FF, however.

Super classy statement from Obama, but there is some HEAVY subtext behind parts of this statement lmao (he “helped pass” the Affordable Care Act, lol.)

If I had to hazard a guess, he probably broke his hip (either the fall broke it or it broke and then he fell, which is also a thing). At that age, a broken hip can be a killer. Maybe not immediately, but complications and just a lack of healing. Lost both of my maternal grandparents that way.

Definite misfire from Brian on this one!

Both sentences. Politics were hardly "simpler" in Lieberman's time.

Has Lindsey Graham said anything? With John McCain they formed an Unholy Trio of Senate neoconservatism after it had gone out of fashion.

He did, yeah. I was watching Fox News (well, my mother was watching Fox News and I happened to walk in the room when they had Graham’s statement on screen) and they also showed statements from Joe Manchin and George W. Bush. My response was “well, if you’re a Democrat who gets this kind of eulogy on Fox News…maybe you weren’t a very good Democrat.”

Joe Lieberman supported the Iraq invasion and opposed the Public Option. He prevented Gore from winning in 2008 and tried to help McCain win in 2008.

I have nothing nice to say about him. My condolences are to the victims and families that died from lack of healthcare.

I am against the idea that every villain in history deserves a heart felt eulogy. Same when Kissinger died.

This is definitely not true. If there's a singular reason why Gore lost in 2000, it's because Clinton pissed off the hard-line Cuban anti-communists in Florida.
