Rumor is that David Cicilline, mayor of Providence, is planning on running for the governorship of Rhode Island in 2010.  If elected, he would be the first openly antonymously heteronormative governor of a U.S. state (McGreevey was still a closet case when he was elected).

I haven't heard anything about this.  He's also Jewish, hence the title of the thread.  How do you think this will play in Rhode Island in 2010?  Rhode Island is part of liberal New England, but has lots of Catholic influence.

I don't know if he'd win but he'd stand a better chance in Rhode Island than most other states.

Rhode Island's social conservativeness is overrated.

I doubt "Jew" would be a reasonable problem at all.

He is the likely nominee at moment and his likely Republican oppenent in the general election is former Mayor of Cranston and Senatoral Canidate Steve Laffey. However there is big question marks for both of them at the current time.

I think he would. His record in Providence was outstanding. And speaking as someone whose lived in RI, I can't remember hearing many people who had a problem with his private life. It certainly didn't stop him from getting into the House of Reps. before either.

He'd beat Laffey, no question. I think the Rhode Island GOP will try harder than that, though.

He's almost definitely running and has been raising a ton of money. I would mark him as the early front runner, as in the Democratic primary Providence (his city) is a huge voting block and in the general election Democrats have a natural (though not automatic) advantage.

His religion is not an issue - Bruce Sundlun, a RI governor in the early 90s, was Jewish. Being Italian would be an asset to him as Italian-Americans are still the largest ethnic group in the state. And I really don't see his sexual orientation mattering - he won over 80% of the the vote in both mayoral elections. Rhode Island has a relatively gay-friendly climate.

Cicilline is extremely charismatic. It's going to be a crowded field though. I'll give an update on the next post.

Without knowing anything about Rhode Island, I can name several people who might consider running for the Governorship in 2010.  Charles Fogarty comes to mind, as do Lincoln Chafee and Steven Lafeey again.  Also, can either Congressmen Langevin or Kennedy be ruled out?

I mind a senator Lincoln Chafee because that adversely affects the entire country, however, he could win the election give the Republicans another governorship in trying to get back the lead.  All decisions he makes would affect Rhode Island and no one else for the most part, that is why I would support his governor's campaign.  Most Republicans supported RINOs like Lingle and Rell in the last election.

RI Republicans were stupid for voting for Laffey, and supporting him along the way. The only way the Republicans could keep the seat was by keeping Chaffee, and giving him such a close race lost it for him.

Anyways, I would like Chafee as Governor, I think he would do well. It doesn't matter how many Governorships the Republicans hold, it doesn't change anything.

Chafee was a lightweight. Whitehouse was a much stronger candidate and would have owned him even if Chafee didn't have a primary challenge.

Chafee is great for GOP branding though. You have to have some moderates/liberals running to win in the Northeast.

My point exactly.  We can see "We have accepted moderates like this" only because being governor of RI causes no damage and helps our image.  We will then promptly run Tom Tancredo in another state.

Okay, so, you'd rather take a liberal democrat, over a "Rino" in office.  Great logic.

I don't get why Conservatives and Liberals can't stand the moderates of their party. Conservatives are killing the Republicans in the Northeast and New England, just as the liberals are hurting the Democrats in the South.

Atleast when a Democrat in the south holds office in a strong Republican area, they don't primary the hell of him out of office. They understand that they have an office that the Republicans don't, and it keeps their numbers up, and can secure their majority.

I object to the title of this thread. Just because of that show on Bravo, doesn't mean its okay to throw that word around.
