Just stumbled on this article.

Quite long though.

Any views on it?

Has a few good points here and there, but overall, a pretty badly written piece (the particular author is exceptionally good at this type of writing).

A tad simplistic, but I do agree that the American left does have a problem with producing a political program that resonates with the average American voter.  Democratic gains of late have not been because of people liking what the Democrats are offering, but disliking or distrusting what the Republicans are offering.  Trying to rebuild the party by being a haven for anti-war hippie types is a short term solution that while it will probably lead to the Dems controlling both Congress and the White House after the 2008 elections will cause the Republicans to party in 2010 like its 1994 if the Dems don't find something the voters like about them once they aren't able to whine about what the evil Republicans are doing anymore.

After the reading the first paragraph, I thought to myself "that sounds more like a conservative than a liberal".

I'm not quite sure why he picked that title, as I didn't particularly see anything about a victim complex in the article.

This sounded remarkably similiar to Nick Cohen's book Whats left? Though with not so dwelling on how Middle class people supported socialism as a cure for humdrum reality.

I actually found and read that a few weeks ago.

Anyway, I basically agree with what Sam said.

This is an interesting article. But it goes after a lot of overused cliches and strawmen. It basically assumes that all upper middle class liberals are the equivalent of BRTD (or the caricature of BRTD, or the self-caricature of BRTD...), stuck in college, wearing Che shirts, listening to the Beastie Boys, desperately searching for meaning in life and something to rebel against and wishing it was the '60s. Not only is it an inaccurate depiction of middle class bicoastal American youth but it borders on bigoted.

[edit out...ehh.... once again me going overboard and painting an overly simplistic view of things]

If you think about it, while there may be a certain victim mentality in the left - it hasn't been anywhere near as effective as the massive campaign to get the right to feel victimised.

Isn't the whole point of leftist thought to notice that the workers are victims?
