The WY GOP have narrowed it down to Sansonetti, Barasso and Lummis. Politics1 describes Lummis as a Freudenthal foe so appointment is unlikely. Sansonetti finished first place in every round of voting thus far so I believe that this guy is the next Senator.

Do you think he looks a bit like a certain famous Wyoming citizen that happens to be Vice President?

On second thought, in color, he doesn't look like Cheney...

Lummis sounds like the best pick from this article. Barrasso sounds like the worst: http://www.casperstartribune.net/articles/2007/06/19/ap-state-wy/d8ps7hl00.txt

Sansonetti was described as the most conservative. I figured you'd dislike him the most.

Barrasso pissed me off with the Gore comment.

If Sansonetti is the most conservative and Fruedenthal dislikes Lummis, that probably makes Barrasso the guy. Hey, at least it's not going to be Cubin.

I think Freudenthal will respect the party and give it to Sansonetti because he is the clear favorite but we'll have to see. They submit the names tomorrow and the Governor has five days.

"Matt Mead, who resigned as U.S. attorney for Wyoming in order to run for the seat, finished fourth with 30 votes. "

Yeah, I remember thinking how stupid that move was when I first read about it.

Freudenthal will not, under any circumstances, appoint his political enemy Lummis. She was the campaign chairman for Freudenthal's opponent in 2006, who barely notched 30% of the vote. Brasso is a charismatic, telegenic GOPer who would be the strongest candidate of the bunch. Colin Simpson and Matt Mead would've been locks for holding this seat in 2008.

Sansonetti is tied to the Abramoff scandal and more closely resembles Daddy Warbucks and Dick Cheney than a Wyoming hunter. He's also spent more time in Washington lately than he's spent in Wyoming.

If I'm Freundenthal, I pick Sansonetti and he the Republican makes some rookie mistakes as Senator.

Hmm.  Let me think about this.  I'm a Democratic governor and I have to pick among three Republicans for a vacant U.S. Senate seat.  I'll probably pick the one with:
- the least likely chance to win in 2008
- the oldest
- the one most fraught with controversy

I probably won't pick:
- the youngest, most attractive, most well spoken, and well-known and liked around Wyoming.

Of course, I'd rather be able to pick a Democrat, but getting to choose among three isn't all that bad.  Too bad for the Republicans that, given the rules in this game, they weren't smart enough to send me three candidates who all had the characteristics of the type of person I won't pick!

In Wyoming, that means winning by 20% instead of 40%.

Why would Lugar give up his safe Senate seat for less than 2 years as VP in an administration with approval ratings of around 30%?

because he is old and it would be a nice way to end a distinguished career.

heck, bush should fire rice and let lugar serve as vp and sec of state both.

I am sure that would meet with neither resistance nor controversy.

A great way to end a distinguished career by taking a job that consists of attending state funerals in the most unpopular administration in recent memory?

I'm sure he'd prefer his current job, where he can actually do things.
