Does anybody remember when I had these two screencaps from CNN in my signature?:

Well now it seems they've done it again.  Just to illustrate how much the war in Afghanistan has been forgotten, CNN has now shown that they can't even remember where the damn place is any more:

This should be news for the people of Syria.

So between FOX's convenient attributions of corruption and sex scandals to Democrats instead of the Republicans who actually committed them, and CNN's almost total ineptitude with basic geography, it looks like the American media is still going from strength to strength.

Some more examples:

That's one huge France!

Why is it that CNN always gets either the Czech Republic or its neighbors wrong?

I think residents of Cardiff would object to that one...

CNN's geography problems aren't limited to Europe, either... apparently Ottawa is now on Lake Ontario...

Holy crap, that wasn't just a careless mistake.  It really took some effort to get it that wrong.

Well, CNN is biased, but I'd think they'd be smart enough to pass geography tests.

Toulouse is funny. All the others are just placed ... shall we say... impressionistically.

CNN uses google earth for their maps.

I doubt the legitimacy of that photo, as I watch CNN, they use google earth, and don't overlay their fonts or text on a map anymore. If that was supposed to be recent, I'd say its fake.

For the France one, that too would be google earth to blame, probably because of poor loading. As for the others, those can be real.

Was channel flipping last night and saw Sen. Pryor's photo on CNN (Anderson Cooper) with the allegation that he was a Senator from Arizona.

LOL,

Well, I wonder if we could arrange a swap.  I'd be more than happy to trade Pryor for McVain.

France is definitely screwed up. Toulouse is not southeast of Paris, and Lille is not northwest either. They really need a graphic artist who can read a map before overlaying anything.

Wow. Talk about bad.

Anchorage's local CBS affiliate, their night time news program has atrocious spelling capabilities. Maybe them and CNN could join forces for a very bad news program. Tongue

Sorry Conan, you lose.  Watch for yourself.

Even if we went with your bizarre assumption about Google Earth being to blame, you don't think it's important that anybody at CNN's graphics department or editorial staff wouldn't take one look at that map and think, "uh, that just looks plain wrong"?

Hey, Tripoli, Lebanon is one of the auto complete suggestions on Wikipedia. CNN's crack team of researchers and graphics department is all over that.

TB Fully F, it has nothing to do with the country with an uprising against Gaddafi as reported in the story. This is just repeated gross slopimess.

Quite the acerbic moron, wasn't he?  He gave the D-NJ avatar an even worse reputation, just when you thought MAS117 couldn't sink it any lower.

Ah, I forgot about MAS.  He spoke English about as well as Kalwejt, despite being a native-born speaker.

Did any of the TS crowd ever actually meet him? He struck me as a guido, or future guido.  I'm curious to know if I was correct.

I just tried to think of who the best poster we've ever had to sport an NJ avatar was.

I...I think it has to be fezzy by default.  That's kind of scary.  (Much like the same process of elimination leaves Tmth as the only acceptable candidate for best Indiana avatar)
