In 2000, it was reported that Republican nominee, Governor George W. Bush, was interested in tapping General Colin Powell to be his VP running mate.

Evidently, Powell's wife did not want him to run, and possibly Powell himself was not interested in the VP slot.

Suppose that Bush was successful in persuading Powell, and Powell's wife, and that the General accepted the VP nomination?

Please discuss how the 2000 election would then turn out.

Governor George W. Bush (TX)/General Colin Powell (NY)
Vs.
Vice President Al Gore (TN)/Senator Joe Lieberman (CT)

Powell probably would have been an improvement over Cheney, though I think that Bush would have had a huge lead in preliminary polling, reminiscent of the Bradley effect.
