I was quite surprised to learn this some months back that, whilst my Dad was in London on a school trip he was arrested on being a suspected IRA terrorist! He was only 15 years old and served two weeks in jail. Knowing the British police back then they'd put anyone of Irish decesent in jail. But back to the major question, Do you know a friend or family member that's been to jail?

My dad spent a night in jail in 1975 before being released without bail by a judge. He did go to trial some months later but was aquitted. That was on charges related to a violent demonstration after the death of Ulrike Meinhof that left a policeman crippled because a firebomb exploded in his lap. (Joschka Fischer was also arrested on account of that. Grin ) My parents actually got together between that demonstration and the trial.
Two years later, on the day of the abduction of Hanns Martin Schleyer, my dad was dragged off a train trying to cross the French-German border, coming back from a holiday, and kept in custody until just after the last northeastbound train left Saarbrücken, forcing my parents to get a hotel room.

I have a cousin who's been arrested and jailed for a few days a couple of times for minor offenses. He's kind of alienated himself from the family since his mother (my aunt) died when he was 18, though. (He's 29 now, I think.) We try from time to time to get in touch with him, but with no luck. He did turn up randomly at my other aunt's funeral last year, but no one in the family has managed to contact him since.

My dad stayed overnight in jail for something minor back in his twenties.

I've got a cousin who was in county jail for about a year on larceny charges.

A friend was arrested in a large drug bust at my school involving an undercover police officer.

The dad of a friend from kindergarten was recently given some serious prison time for running a meth lab.

That's all I can think of.

Yes, I know family members that have been to jail. Most of the time it hasn't been significant though.

One situation I wish didn't happen was when one of my aunts had to serve prison time for killing her husband in self defense.

The prosecution was going after her for first degree murder and she plea bargined for a much lessor sentence because a judge recommended she do that (the track record for juries convicting indians in my area is scary).

What was really messed up about it is that she was pregnant at the time and they took her away about a month after she gave birth.

Let's see:

1.  A guy about two years ahead of me in high school was convicted of murdering his wife (1st degree).  It was at best a nodding acquaintance.

2.  A guy I knew in college before he was convicted of armed robbery (and before he committed it).

3.  I've met both R. Budd Dwyer and Ernie Preate (Google both).  A rather close friend from college was on both gents staffs and was basically an unindicted  co-conspirator in Preate; part of Preate's plea deal was that he wouldn't be prosecuted.

He was also one of the aides in the room when Dwyer shot himself.

4.  My friend's Viv's uncle just got out for attempted murder.

5.  One of my current clients was indicted in April or May for allegedly trying to get a $500 K bribe (I'm betting on dismissal).  It happened prior to me being hired by his group.

6.  At the welfare office, I had several clients that had done time.

7.  Another client's situation was mentioned on 60 Minutes, but he wasn't arrested.

My brother has been to jail quite a few times.  My dad's uncle shot an FBI officer and was in prison for a very long time.  My dad's cousin was in jail as well.

But they're all 100% Scottish by blood, so I'm not surprised.  Too much whiskey and mashed up sheep organs.

a couple friends have spent a night in jail for a dwi.

A girl I went to high school with (though didn't know well) pled guilty to manslaughter for the killing of her mother's ex boyfriend.  her mother was found guilty of second degree murder, and another man pled guilty to second degree murderg

Oh, friends of friends. A distant-ish mate of a good friend, whom I myself have only met once, is in prison for life for shooting a cop dead.

I've had a fair share of friends in jail over the years, one of them being in federal prison.  Rarely did I go to visit them though.

My second cousin that I've never met is in jail for murder. He killed a guy at a bar because he was annoyed, drunk, and an ex-Marine.

I can close myself, however, the only one I know of was a distant relative who was in a gambling ring.

At first I thought this was inexplicable.  What is DWTL trying to say - he 'can close' himself, unlike those who have been to prison?  It is a good point - they famously experience anal problems after all that rape.

But then I realized he just meant that he 'came close' himself.

Has anyone ever noticed how people who have been to prison have few or no  teeth left?  Is this just because they are poors, and thus their teeth fall out, or is it due to fighting?  Or perhaps the prison BJs are better with no teeth..

In any case, I have one distant relative who, absurdly, spend several years in prison for 'dealing marijuana'.  What a truly world-class travesty!

My Grandad, for the heinous crime of being a working class pacifist.
