I'm fascinated by the concept of tactical voting.  I'm wondering what seats in this years election will see a major use of it this time around.  Also, in elections past I believe its mostly been used by Labor and Lib Dems as a way to unseat Tories, but I'm wondering about the concept of Tory supporters voting Lib Dem in some constituencies where the Conservatives have no chance, but a combined Lib Dem Con majority exists, as a way to defeat as many Labour candidates as possible.

Etc.

Places where this might be a factor this time include Oxford East, Newcastle upon Tyne North, Brent Central, various other Lab-LD marginals.

Anti-Labour tactical voting goes back to 1918, at least. One reason why anti-Tory tactical voting in 1997 and 2001 got so much attention was because it was so new.

So if you had to guess, more anti-tory tactical voting? Anti-labour? Even?

Impossible to measure until after the event... and even then, impossible to measure accurately. Though there's no chance that anti-Tory tactical voting will be as strong as it was in 1997 and there's no way that anti-Labour tactical voting will be as strong as it was in the interwar period.

Have any of the main party leaders visited anyone on here's home towns yet? Gordon Brown came to Rugby on Monday, and he was literally just a few yards down the road from my house.

David Cameron came to Bolton last week and did an appearance at Warburton's Bakery (in Bolton NE) in front of a huge number of loaves.  Inevitably the Times put this image on their front page headlined "The best thing since sliced bread?" Smiley

Now it seems less than 30 constituencies will start counting Friday morning. Sunderland Central now counting Thursday so may be first to declare.

Is Northern Ireland declaring on Friday afternoon/evening again?
