I'm watching old Democratic debates from 1992.

Jerry strikes me as the stronger debate and he comes across as the more genuine candidate. Clinton has more charisma, but even trying to remove myself from any bias or preconceived notions, Clinton strikes me as disingenuous.

While I think Clinton was a good President, Brown seems like he was the stronger candidate, the stronger debater. So I'm wondering how Clinton convinced the Democratic Party in 1992 to give their votes to him, over Brown?

No Democrat is going to be nominated by advocating for the abolishment of the Dept of Education and a tax policy created by Art Laffer.

Bill Clinton was the establishment pick long before the 1992 campaign began.  TIME Magazine ran a cover on Bill Clinton in 1991; they didn't do that for anyone else.

Clinton was a moderately liberal Southerner who was able to carry some Southern states and be competitive in others.  Brown (who I voted for) still had the Governor Moonbeam image, and he also had a Loser Image.  His stronger-than-expected showing in 1992 allowed him to completely reinvent himself and regain the Governorship of California.  Most people thought Jerry Brown was through in 1982, but his reinvention of himself was truly masterful.
