Let's say that in 1952, former First Lady and diplomat Eleanor Roosevelt runs as a Democrat against WWII General Dwight Eisenhower. Who would win this matchup and what would the electoral map look like?

The magic of the Roosevelt name adds, slightly, to the Democratic totals, taking Mssouri, Rhode Island, and Tennessee, in addition to what Stevenson won.

Still a landslide win for Eisenhower.

No Democrat would have defeated Ike in 1952, and no Democrat would have even made the election result competitive.

Instead of 442/89

Eisenhower               414
Roosevelt                  117

Roosevelt wouldn't have even won New York?

New York, no.

You're talking Eleanor Roosevelt here, not FDR.  Ike carried New York state by about 12% against Stevenson, and 12% in New York at that time was about 850,000 votes.  Eleanor would not be able to make up a deficit like that.

Ike made solid gains in the south in 1952, Texas included.  Texas would stay with Ike.

Frankly, in 1952, a woman candidate for President would be viewed with a tremendous amount of trepidation by most voters.  Back then, many voters would not vote for a woman because she was a woman.

Eleanor would not be as strong a candidate as some may think she would be.  We are talking about 1952.  A woman, any woman, would not be taken as a serious contender back then.

The only thing that scares a South more than a Republican president is a women president, she carries only Alabama and Mississippi and carries by them with slim margins:

Democratic strongholds like MO, WV, MD and MN remain democratic but the  interior midwest and CA goes Republican.

How was MN a Democratic stronghold in 1952?

Sure, Truman did very well there in 1948, but Roosevelt never got much above his national average.  HHH was the first Democratic Senator from the state in who knows how long.  I would say if anything MN leaned every so slightly to the Republicans, especially a moderate one like Eisenhower, in 1952.

Although MN wasn't a Democratic stronghold it was a progressive state. It voted for the likes of progressive candidates T. Roosevelt and Truman who championed progressive ideas like social security and fair labor laws. Ms. Roosevelt was a strong advocate in progressive legislation as well such as passing the minimum wage. She was the one that got her husband who was reluctant to pass such legislation. And I think the state would of supported her as well.
