Is it even useful for the Republicans to campaign in Massachusetts and for the Democrats to campaign in Utah?(in Presidential elections).

No, because it'd be pointless (unless there's an exceptionally strong candidate at hand)

Actually wouldn't Rudy maybe be an exception in Mass?  bc of his liberal views on abortion, gay rights, gun control and Stem Cell Research?

Only if the republicans nominate Cindy Sheehan and the Democrats nominate Jesus.

No. Massachusetts is more partisan than it is liberal. I'd also say Rudy's rabid pro-war stance and constant defense of Bush's actions and foreign policy more than cancels out his socially liberal views.

So you think Massachusetts would vote for Sheehan over Jesus? It must not be that Catholic after all...

Rudy would maybe, MAYBE have a shot if it wasn't for Iraq, but he aint going to win it.

Now, it wouldn't be useless for him to campaign there. He wouldn't win the state, but he could get maybe 42-44%, That's if he goes against a weak candidate.

Even in an extreme situation it's not useful. The Republicans don't need Massachusetts at all, and the Democrats don't need Utah.

If Massachusetts is even remotely close to being competitive, the election's already over anyway.  The GOP's best shot here is Rudy Giuliani, who I'd imagine would do unusually well with the Italian/Catholic communities here.

Still, that just means he'd lose by "only" 15.

I don't believe I expressed a hatred of the city, just that it makes shutout Repubilcans victories impossible

Personally, I think if

Arizona, Arkansas, Viriginia or North Carolina even became competitve, the election is already over for the GOP....

If California, New Jersey or Maine became competitve, the election would be done with the Dems.

The person who stops campaigning in any of these states is already dead: Nevada, Colordo, New Mexico, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Floria. (basically the Big Three, The Western Great Lakes and the suburban western states)

Would you like to amend this?

if the iraq war is over by nov. 08, rudy might be able to keep it iwthin 15 in mass.

otherwise, no way.

I dunno. Its about how the war ended as well, if the dems successfully gain enough GOP votes and get a bill that scales back the war in a way that brings 70% of the soldiers home and the rest into Kurdistan or the desert by the election, the anti-war fervor may turn to rewarding the dems instead of punishing the GOP.
