In mid to late 2003, John Kerry (the former front runner of the race) was having staff and money troubles and was falling behind in the polls. I was sure that he would drop out in the winter. He would later go on to win Iowa and New Hampshire and then the nomination.

In mid 2007, John McCain (the former front runner of the race) is having staff and money troubles and has fallen behind in the polls. Would it be possible for him to pull out a win in Iowa and gain momentum like Kerry did in '04?

No, because there is no "Dean" in this race to be concerned with stopping.

Insiders may be weary of Giuliani in the same way that insiders were weary of Dean.

...but then again those same insiders may be weary of McCain too.

There already is a "stop Giuliani" candidate though, Thompson.

Kinda like how Wesley Clark was the "stop Dean" candidate?

And Thompson is equally as boring and unappealing to me.

Who is Mitt Romney? Edwards '04?

No.  Unlike McCain, Kerry never pissed off the base of the Democrats on the most important issue of the day.  His campaign faltered simply because he was uninspiring.  A better comparison would be Joe Lieberman.

Romney is the Kerry of 2008 for the GOP

he 'looks like a president' and he is the slow and steady turtle working his way up. Giuliani and Thompson will slug it out and Romney may just waltz in while no one notices

McCain's problems are not with his campaign they are threefold
1. He is very old...older than most people say they want a president
2. He has pissed off the hardcore base by not being loyal in the past and for the immigration thing
3. He has pissed off the middle and left over his waaay too tied to Bush and Iraq thing

So his constituency are those somewhere between conservative independents and independent conservatives

Honestly, I wouldn't totally rule it out. The next few months will be critical for his campaign. Let's see what happens.
