I can remember spending lots of time trudging around Bebington, Rock Ferry and Clatterbridge campaigning for him when he was first elected.

In many respects an absolutely typical Tory MP, except for the fact that he's Labour! I remember hearing that he had only joined the party six months before he was selected as the candidate for the by-election in February 1997.

He's a very assiduous constituency MP, which has helped him hold on to what used to be a safe Tory seat, but his slightly pompous manner has rubbed some of his local party up the wrong way from time to time.

The LibDems seem to be getting stronger all the time at local government level in his constituency but this hasn't really had any impact at parliamentary level, where they are still in third place.
