Let's suppose in 1994, John 'Jeb' Ellis Bush is elected Governor of Florida over incumbent Lawton Chiles. Whilst in Texas, Jeb's brother George is defeated by incumbent Ann Richards. In 1998, Governor Bush is re-elected over Buddy MacKay in a landslide. After months of speculation, Governor Bush announces his intentions to run for the 2000 Republican Nomination in late October.

After winning the Iowa Caucus and both the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries, Governor Bush is unstopable and secures the GOP nomination in early March. For Vice President, Governor Bush selects New Hampshire Senator Bob Smith to be his running mate.

Like in Real Life, Vice President Al Gore cruises to the Democratic Nomination despite opposition from former Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey. However instead of chosing Joe Lieberman to be his running mate (like in RL), Vice President Gore selects Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa.

How would this election turn out? Would Jeb be the Second President Bush? Or would Gore lead a Democratic Administration into the 21st century? Discuss with maps.

NOTE: THESE ARE THE PRESIDENTIAL TICKETS IN THIS SCENARIO:

Jeb Bush/Bob Smith (R)
Al Gore/Tom Harkin (D)

Bush could have picked a better running mate, anyway, in this scenario, Jeb scores a narrow, yet undisputed win, over Gore.

Smith's presence on the ticket secures New Hampshire for the GOP, and Harkin's presence on the ticket secures Iowa for the Dems.

Jeb, extremely popular in his home state, wins Florida by a crushing margin over Gore.

Jeb's spanish speaking skills go over extremely well in New Mexico, and Bush scores a comfortable win over Gore in that state.  Jeb's wife Columba and their son George P Bush  campaign heavily in New Mexico, utilizing their mastery of the Spanish language to great advantage.  This as well helps Bush win New Mexico.

Bush finishes the election with a popular vote advantage over Gore of about 1,000,000 votes.

The election, though close, is a clean win for Bush over Gore, and no recounts are necessary.

Gore/Harkin                262

Hey Walter, who do you think Jeb Bush would have selected to be his running mate? I only used Bob Smith as the Republican's Vice Presidential nominee in this scenario.

My suggestion for VP for Jeb Bush

Jeb bush picks highly respected and very capable former Missouri Senator John C Danforth for Vice President.  The selection of Danforth provides a credible nominee for Vice President that Americans feel comfortable with, and Jeb Bush himself has confidence in Danforth that he would make a capable President if required to do so.

Danforth has the Washington experience that Bush lacks, as well, Danforth as a moderate is a good balance to Bush's conservatism, however, Danforth's moderate approach is acceptable to the GOP conservative base, and helps Bush in more moderate states, such as New Hampshire, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Oregon.

This election would be a clear win for Bush and Danforth

Gore/Harkin                   244
