Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney hold the leads in their respective New Hampshire primary races, a new Monitor poll shows. But it's not all good news for the top two: The poll finds each would face thornier challenges in the state's general election than others would.

In the Republican primary, 27 percent back Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, while 20 percent pick former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani and 16 percent choose Arizona Sen. John McCain. Former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson, who hasn't announced yet, debuts at 15 percent, his numbers appearing to take directly from McCain, a close friend.

In the Democratic primary, 33 percent choose Clinton, the New York senator, while 25 percent pick Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and 15 percent go with former vice presidential nominee John Edwards. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson snags 7 percent in the poll.

...

In head-to-head matches, the top three Democrats beat the top three Republicans in every case but one (Giuliani versus Edwards).

Haha, imagine how bad a Clinton vs. Romney matchup would be for both of us.

It would be a good matchup for non-voting or 3rd party voting. If the last polls before election day show a comfortable Clinton win, I wouldn´t vote for her at all or third party. I would only vote for Clinton if a close race is shaping up and I doubt Romney is the man for that ... Tongue

I'll probably only vote for Hillary if:

1-Minnesota is looking close.
2-She picks someone I really like (read: Obama) as her running mate.
3-There are no left wing third party candidates, and I don't count the Republican-funded Green Party or authoritarian POS Nader as left wing.

That probably goes hand-in-hand with this finding of the poll:

"President Bush narrowly escapes that category, with 43 percent supporting impeachment action and 45 percent opposed."

and

"In the new Monitor poll, 23 percent of people said they think the war in Iraq was worth launching; 70 percent said they think it was not."

Per our long-lost friend Vorlon, R2000 polls a lot like Mason-Dixon but cuts a lot of corners, which of course typically leads to a poll which is slightly Democratic-leaning (and my perusal of the numbers strengthens that analysis).  The lean might be affected a bit b/c it's a summer poll, but I really doubt it too much at this stage of the game.

Anyway, this should be a good poll, but it is important to take this into account.
