James Buchanan

And in any debate the last two Presidents should never be on since people have too many opinions on them before what they've done can show through.

I'm leaning towards McKinley. (Who isn't on the poll amazingly. Out of those Wilson, Bush the Younger, Nixon and Jackson are all contenders. Even Adams the Elder too but in a lesser way.)

Why the consensus around Buchanan? He was merely a corrupt unimaginative (well, a slave owner...) bungler in a position way out of his league - his generations Harding but in a much more crucial period. But he didn't use his position for evil - unlike some other Presidents I've named.

Wow, there are certain people who think that certain Presidents were the worst which are genuinely difficult to imagine. Then again I should have known better.

Reagan was pretty bad, but GWB has been far worse. Although I'll be fair and won't rank him until his term has expired. I'll say Buchanan for this poll.

The one that you left off the list that shocked me the most was Clinton, as you had to know he would receive a good deal of partisan bashing at the very least.

Of those you neglected to list, the worst was Jefferson who was a disaster as President whose only meaningful accomplishments were the Louisiana Purchase, which was a total accident of history, and the sending out of the Corps of Discovery.  While not the worst president we ever had (that dishonor belongs to Wilson)  Jefferson definitely belongs in the bottom quartile of Presidents.  His best years were in the period up 1779 when he was a legislator.  Once he moved into executive positions such as Governor of Virginia, he proved such an excellent example of it that we really should consider renaming the Peter Principle as the Thomas Principle.

James Buchanan just sat back and allowed the Civil War to happen.  I don't think we can judge Clinton or GWB just yet.

I would agree with the fact that James Buchanan was the worst President. He commited treason while in the White House. You cannot get much worse than that.

Actually he was completely following the constitution.

As for the sake of the poll Lincoln, but FDR was much worse.  Carter only narrowly beats out Lincoln

Reagan, Jackson, Johnson, Buchanan, Harding, Wilson were all pretty horrible. But George W. Bush "wins" overall.
