Basically two Midway-class carriers (at least in terms of displacement: 65,000 tons).  Not quite as capable though, mainly because of the decision to add extra amenities and forego catapults.  Somewhat more capable as an aircraft carrier than the planned LHA-6 class (50,000 tons displacement) but then the Tarawa-class replacements will have the handicap of having Marines on board. Not what I was hoping for, my grandpa says they're wasting money not splurging for the best of everything now, then again I am happy they've ordered to of something new for now.

Weren't they building a new class of mid-sized (compared to the Nimitz variants) carriers with the French?

How soon before the CVS class is decommissioned (Invincible...Ark Royal...?)

The French will be building a carrier based off the same CVF design as the Queen Elizabeth class.  Differences will include steam catapults so that the French can continue to operate CTOL aircraft instead of having to buy F-35B's.
