Let's suppose that Al Gore runs for his old Senate seat next year. What would the results look like? Would Gore still be electable in TN after drifting to the left over so many years?

The closest the race would get would be 55-45. Gore has drifted way too far to the left to be elected statewide in Tennessee, atleast in my opinion.

I agree, Al Gore would be soundly defeated by Lamar Alexander. Alexander isn't as safe as Ted stevens or Domenici or McConnell but he has a maverick streak in him and it may turn off some conserative voters that Dems could exploit.

I think Gore is probably still fairly popular in Tennessee.  However, I still think Alexander would win.  Gore couldn't win in 2000 for the same reasons he wouldn't win in 2008.

alexander would win.  51-49

it is too bad that the then governor alexander didnt take on al gore for the open senate seat in 1984.  alexander would have won and history would have been altered.

I never thought of that your probably right.  I'm always surprised by how solidly Gore won in 1984, however, something like 61%?  So it probably would have been close.  I suppose Gore could still have had a national career though if he had been elected Governor in 1986 - that might have put him in a better position for the 1992 nomination.

im surprised at how well mondale did in tennessee, at least compared to the other southern states.

im really surprised that gore managed to win every county in 1990.

Though Gore may be still popular in his native Tennessee, I'd doubt he'd be able to re claim the seat he once had.

In my mind Lamar Alexander would win, probably with a 53-47 margin.
