Idaho as a whole has just gotten more Republican.  Several counties in the North that routinely went for Democrats before 2000 have now become solidly Republican in Presidential elections.  Here's the last few election results in the county:

1996
Bill Clinton (Dem)    7,491    44.87%
Bob Dole (Rep)    6,675    39.87%
Ross Perot (Ref)    2,385    14.28%

2000
George W Bush (Rep)   10577   66.02%
Al Gore (Dem)      4995   31.18%

2004
George W Bush (Rep)      11009   62.20%
John F Kerry (Dem)      6476   36.59%

I think it was trending Republican before 2000, but the Perot factor  gave it to Clinton.  The local Democratic commitee is making a comeback, we hold all but two or three county wide offices.

According to the census bureau:

2000 Idaho Hispanic population:
101,690

2003 Idaho Hispanic population:
110,604

A growth of 9,000.  I think this is primarily in the southern regions, I have not seen much growth of the Hispanic population in the north.

Just as a point of information:

2004 Idaho statewide result:
Bush    409,235  68.4%
Kerry   181,098   30.3%
Nader      1,115    0.2%

2000 Idaho statewide result:
Bush  336,937  67.2%
Gore  138,637  27.6%
Nader  12,292    2.5%

Both candidates increased their percentages.  So basically third parties were not even a factor in this election and most of Nader's 2000 voters went to Kerry.  (As a note, Nader was not officially on the ballot either year.)

BTW, I lived in Tip's district during his last years as Speaker. He always remained an attentive Rep to his constituents. Now I live in Speaker Hastert's district. He does a good job of staying in touch with the district, too.

Kerry probably improved so much in Idaho because of his nationwide gains among the ski resort areas.

Shelby County, TN

Shelby hasn't voted Republican since 1988, as the demographics are now 48% white, 49% black, and 3% other.

Since 1992, the GOP averages about 41% of the vote in Shelby County in presidential elections.

However, in countywide elections, the GOP holds 14 of 16 elected offices and 7 of 12 County Commision seats.

Mecklenburg County (Charlotte)
1960:  Nixon--55.1%
1964:  Johnson--51.6%
1968:  Nixon--52.4% (and Wallace came in 3rd)
1972:  Nixon--68.5%
1976:  Carter--50.4%
1980:  Reagan--47.8%
1984:  Reagan--62.7%
1988:  Bush--59.4%
1992:  Bush--43.6%
1996:  Clinton--48.6%
2000:  W--51.0%
2004:  Kerry--51.6%
The thing about Charlotte that seems different from other Southern cities like Memphis or New Orleans, is that white people (married ones at that) aren't 80/20 Republican, I'd say more like 60/40 (Charlotte barely has 20% blacks):
[51.6% - 0.2(90%)] / 0.8 ~ 42% whites vote Democrat.
Go to a grocery store and you'll see plenty of minivans/SUVs with the Kerry/Edwards stickers still on 'em.  Most of my neighbors (who were also white for the most part) were and are Democrats.  The good thing about NC it seems is that a lot of growing places are also trending Democrat.  (I belive Wake County which went from Bush +7 to +3 is one of the 100 fastest-growing counties.  There's also Chatham county, but it's still pretty small.)

I guess since my present home of DuPage County Il is spoken for, I'll speak up for the county I was born and raised in.  That is Waupaca County Wisconsin.  Said county has voted Republican every time since its inception with three exceptions.  In 1852 it voted for Winfield Scott on the Whig ticket over Democrat Frankin Pierce, and it chose FDR in 1932 and 1936.

I think that's just on new elections. I don't think the Atlas has stuff on 1796. Or maybe I'm mistaken - I'm no paying member. Tongue
