Sorry to be picky, but #5 contravenes the rule you stated yourself as "not acceptable" just three posts before that one.

Actually I think it's acceptable. Since they're running in the same race, it's basically "A ran against B for the office" only the actual election hasn't happened yet.

1. Earl Dodge ran as the vice presidential candidate on the Prohibition party ticket in 1980, with Benjamin C. Bubar at the head of the ticket.
2. Benjamin C. Bubar ran against Ronald Reagan.
3. In one political speech, Ronald Reagan reportedly used Clint Eastwood's "Make my day" line from the movie Sudden Impact.
(i dunno if that last one would be acceptable)

William Jennings Bryan and Ralph Nader.

(In response to Joe:  I think what he meant by his earlier comment was that things like "George Washington and George Wallace both ran for President" are unacceptable, while "George Wallace and Richard Nixon ran against each other in 1968" are.)

1) Earl Dodge ran as the Prohibition Party's candidate against Al Gore in 2000.
2) Al Gore and Tommy Lee Jones were roommates at Harvard.
3) Tommy Lee Jones and Clint Eastwood both appeared in Space Cowboys.

Bah, King beat me to it.  Posting this for kicks.

William Jennings Bryan and Ralph Nader.

Thoroughly abusing Ronald Reagan's acting career and imdb...

1) William Jennings Bryan was (effectively) portrayed by Fredric March in the 1960 film, Inherit the Wind.
2) Fredric March and Virginia Mayo were both in the 1947 film, "The Best Years of Our Lives."
3) Virginia Mayo and Ronald Reagan were both in the 1952 film, "She's Working Her Way Through College"
4) Ronald Reagan challenged Gerald Ford for the 1976 Presidential Nomination
5) Gerald Ford and Bob Dole were running-mates in 1976.
6) Bob Dole and Ralph Nader both ran for President in 1996.

Fair point.

My own Packwood-Gravel connection was that they both defeated the only two senators to vote against the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, but DWPerry did well with his own link.

My bad.  I didn't see the word DEFEATED in your first post!

I misread it and thought Packwood and Gravel voted for it.

William Proxmire served along with Gaylord Nelson as Wisconsin's Senators for 18 years.

Gaylord Nelson was elected to the Senate in 1962 along with Birch Bayh of Indiana (BTW: both defeated incumbents)

Birch Bayh was defeated by Dan Quayle in 1980.

Richard Nixon defeated Lyndon Johnson for President in 1968

Is that entirely accurate?

(Excellent connection between the Johnsons, though. Smiley )

I guess DWPerry could get rid of Harold Stassen and the chain would work with the following...

G.H.W Bush was appointed to the UN by Richard Nixon
Nixon defeated Hubert Humphrey in 1968
Humphrey was VP under LBJ

Now try mine again - Dennis Hastert and Charles Sumner (this was random by me)

I skipped a step, accidentally
Nixon defeated Humphrey in 1968
Humphrey was the Dem nominee after LBJ withdrew
