Depressing to see how predictable voting in this Senate has been isn't it?

Let me guess how everyone else will vote:

Aye: Porce, Al, EarlAW, Rob
Nay: DWDL, Phil, PBrunsel, BrandonH, Sam Spade
Absent: Lewis Trondheim (would vote Aye if he was here)

Let's see if I'm wrong.

Nay

Way too drastic of a step, it also does not specify whether a student currently enrolled in a school and receiving a voucher is still eligible.

Ex. A student just finished their freshman year at High School A, they cannot afford the school without the voucher, does this student get to finish out the year?  I am not completly opposed to removing vouchers, however, this amendment is a rash, not well thought out response and I think was more of a reaction than an actual amendment

Just for the record, I'm not supporting this amendment because I don't like vouchers. I'm supporting it because I don't think the federal government should be funding a regional school system. If this bill were to get rid of federal money for public schools, I would support it too.

Add one more.

Nay

The Region which contains most of the states in my district uses a voucher system. As long as the federal government continues to fund education in the regions, then I have the obligation to my constituents to make sure that they are not left out.

You certainly have not broken away too much, in fact I would be willing to assume you are more stringent in the pattern than I am.  I have broken on a number of issues actually.

I've never seen such steadfast holding to what are effectively party lines in my time watching the goings on here. There have always been blocs before but there doesn't seem to be any real swing voters in the current line-up.

I have considered just about every vote I have cast in this Senate carefully (which is why I've actively abstained a fair bit).

I didn't actually mention you and didn't really have you in mind, btw. I find it best not to think about you actually.

Well, according to my voting records I have been keeping track of, Al is the most independent member of the liberal bloc, though that doesn't say much.

I have changed my decision on this amendment, as it would just discourage regional voucher programs. I would support it if the amendment cut federal funding to all education at the regional level: public, voucher, or parochial.

With 3 votes in favor, 5 votes against, 1 not voting and 1 seat absent, the amendment has failed.

Many of the Senators who voted against this amendment voted in favor of cutting off all federal funding to science and sex education programs.  Fascinating.

That is spin at its finest.  Your science bill did not nothing but discourage freedom and freedom of ideas but limiting what could be taught if federal money was accepted.  This does the same exact thing, the bill is basically taking the same issue from a different angle.  The two votes are one in the same.

No, I am not talking about that.  I am talking about an amendment that sought to end all funding to science and sex education cirriculums regardless of what they taught.  All of the conservatives voted for it.

Ah, I knew you were spinning something.  That was a vote against funding schools, not against funding students.

That seems like an awfully convenient distinction to make.  If you're funding vouchers, why would you support removing all federal funds towards chemistry courses?  Way to make kids go to ill-equipped schools.  Look, I'm just curious, you can't actually support targeting types of education one-by-one, can you?  Defunding science but not math, for example?  Those amendments were ridiculous and everyone knew it.

My point still stands, that was a vote against schools this would have been a vote against students

Well it would be a better slogan than "champion of raising taxes", but I won't.  My point stands still that voting against funding a school is not the same as voting against funding a student.

I have to completely agree. As can be seen I predicted the exact vote, except for Rob not voting which he seems to be doing alot now. Even when the UP had a majority in the Senate in the 7th or 8th Senate it was much more independently oriented than now. Oddly I think this is the first time we've had a Senate that has been made up completely of organized blocs or coalitions. The Right-Wing Bloc is a coalition of the two largest groups of the right, the RPP (or whatever the hell they call themselves now) and the Republicans, are they abbreviated RPA now? (Republican Party of Atlasia) or is it still AFRNC. The Left-Wing Bloc is a coalition of the diverse left with the PLP, JCP, SLA, and independent socialists in the mix. This Senate has no moderates in it. The closest thing to swing voters are Al and Sam which isn't saying much. If anything is shows in my mind that the moderate forces within Atlasia have almost disappeared, most likely because of the lack of a unified party of the centre. That leads to nothing more than the horrendous polarization that we've seen in this Senate.

I am proud to not be a moderate.  Rather, I am a proud centrist.  I realize that I am probably not at the center of Atlasia right now, but that is not my measure.

Of course, considering most of the bills that have been put in front of the Senate so far, it is rather difficult for me to be swing voter.  This legislation is a good example of that.

Which reminds me, what are your thoughts on this bill, Mr. President?
