I am not a senator, but my opposition to this bill comes from the excessive taxation of LSD. I would support this bill if the LSD tax was lowered to >5%

Like yourself, SPC, I love small government and cutting spending.  However, I think at times we must be practical.  We have to have some kind of spending and the best way to pay for that is with optional taxes, not things that are applied to anyone simply because they are in the country.  That is why I support such a high tax on LSD.

I'm wondering what would be the long term effects of legalized LSD. Does the drug have any redeaming factors?

I see no reason to allow such a drug to be used widely because it fails to have medical benefit, and actually would hurt the populous far more than it would "help" the government.

It does have some medical value, although I've forgotten what exactly.

I'll try to look it up. I hadn't heard that, but it could be true.

Aha, it seems to help the mentaly ill in some way. However, research is limited. Wouldn't it make sense to simply lift on restrictons on the research of the medical benefits of LSD? Than there would be a more compelling argument to legalize it.

I would oppose overall legalization of LSD. I would support legalization for medical purposes. I would also support removing all federal laws against LSD and give each region the right to legalize or illegalize it.

It's not addictive and it doesn't have any adverse health effects, except the possibility of causing birth defects, which is shared with plenty of legal drugs.

Keep your immature comments for the campaign trail, Senator. Some of us want a civil tone in the Senate.

How about this:

I withdraw my amendment to strike Clause 3 and replace it with the following:

Section 3: Taxation
1. Taxes on LSD will be 30% per ounce.  Individual regions may set their own taxes on LSD as they see fit.
2. Revenue raised from taxes on LSD and marijuana will be split evenly among the following two funds:
a.) Needle exchange programs
b.) Public transportation, to be distributed among regions as appropriate.

I'll consider it friendly

I won't.

In spirit of Senator BrandonH said, I would like to propose the following amendment to Section 1:

To replace the context of the Section with the following:

Applicability:
1.) This law shall remove all federal restrictions on LSD in addition to legalization in Washington DC and other federal territories which do not form a region.

Considering I have objected to this amendment as friendly, we are now voting on the following amendment:

How about this:

I withdraw my amendment to strike Clause 3 and replace it with the following:

Section 3: Taxation
1. Taxes on LSD will be 30% per ounce sold.  Individual regions may set their own taxes on LSD as they see fit.
2. Revenue raised from taxes on LSD and marijuana will be split evenly among the following two funds:
a.) Needle exchange programs
b.) Public transportation, to be distributed among regions as appropriate.

Please vote Aye, Nay or Abstain.

Aye.

Agree with the general gist of the bill; see obvious problems with the way its written - in either version. Abstain on the amendment, will try to come up with something better in the coming days.

Aye

Using drug tax money to fund a program that primarily would be used by drug dealers makes sense.

Section 1 without Section 2 would legalize it in DC and territories but would still ban it in the regions. Also, I would recommend you change Washington to Nyman.

You don't have to accept as friendly a change to your own amendment from another party.

However, are you requesting that this amendment be motioned as friendly for the general Senate?
