I shall vote aye. I beelive this does enough to secure the rights of regions (as Section One outlines) and also helps regional programs (such as needle sharing and bridge repair) which si something I do support. I feel that regions should have the ultimate say over such programs, but the federal government, if it so chooses, decides to give help to regional plans (and not enforce its own programs on regions) than I can not oppose for any grounds of Federalism.

Section 3: Taxation
1. Taxes on LSD will be 30% per ounce sold.  Individual regions may set their own taxes on LSD as they see fit.
2. Revenue raised from taxes on LSD and marijuana will be split evenly among the following two funds:
a.) Needle exchange programs
b.) Public transportation, to be distributed among regions as appropriate.

Sorry for not getting to this earlier (despite promising to) and then being absent for three days...

30% per ounce sold? What's that supposed to mean? Taxation in kind?
Taxes on marijuana aren't mentioned anywhere else in the bill.
And what the hell do they have to do with needle exchange programs (okay, admittedly, they don't strictly have to. They don't have anything to do with public transport either. Still, strikes me as odd. Anyways, this will leave needle exchange programs ridiculously overfunded. It's not as if they cost a fortune.)

With that strange stuff in, I will reluctantly have to

Abstain

for the moment. Might yet be swayed, though.

A shame that the Senate chose to rubber stamp what is, whether or not you agree with legalising drugs, an appalling piece of legislation.

Past Senates have voted for worse o/c.

Personally, I have no problems legalizing LSD.  But the legislation was simply too poorly written for me to support.  I hope the President vetoes, but I doubt he will.

There is nothing sad about finally taking steps towards ending the ridiculous idea that someone should go for prison just for using LSD.

They'll probably just halluncinate they are in prison, no big difference.

Anyway, I have no problem with legalizing LSD, I have problems with this legislation.

Once and for all we can put to bed the notion that everyone votes in one large mass

The split vote seems to be mostly because of poor drafting rather than any ideological differences.

Only Sam's vote had anything to do with drafting, Phil and Al stated they vote against it from the beginning.

This bill is a terrific arguement for that expanded line item veto power.  The taxation section is a fiscal nightmare.
