When a sensible head on a pair of shoulders dies it's always a sad day Sad He was an opponent of the community charge and a supporter of gay rights. And yes he may have been labelled as a Powellite (by those who knew what Powell actually stood for) but to take the name in his stride was to his credit.

Wouldn't have voted for him, but not bad as far as Shropshire Tories go... contemporaries of him on that front included Eric Cockeram, Christopher Gill and Warren Hawksley. Vile near-fascist idiots all (add the word "corrupt" in the case of Cockeram).

Biffen was perhaps too dry economically my tastes; nevertheless, I shall applaud him for his opposition to the iniquitous poll tax. RIP
