A former MEP who stood in the first Welsh Assembly elections in 1999 and became the first Labour candidate in living memory to lose Rhondda. He took over this seat from Ron Davies in 2001.

Which wasn't really his fault, but that of the local council and whoever's bright idea it was to rig the Welsh Labour leadership election with so little skill.
