Yes. I believe some post-election poll showed the issue caused a 5% swing against him.

Here's an article that mentions it: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/PrintStory.pl?document_id=2003453826&zsection_id=268883724&slug=broder30&date=20061130

And you're quoting a poll by the Poker Players Alliance about whether a Congressman lost b/c of his opposition to online gambling seriously?

Come on, BRTD, I thought you were better than that.

Well given the closeness of the election and the nature of the district it would make sense.

Poll was done by RT Strategies, not familiar with them.

RT Strategies was the (first-year) company that gave us all those House polls last year which were some good, some bad.

Doesn't matter.  The way they ask the question - the respondents could have been pushed very easily to make a 5% bad/10% good morph into a 15% bad/10% good scale.

And considering who sponsored the poll, that wouldn't surprise me.

Leach lost because he was in a heavily Democratic district in a Democratic year.

Not even Iowa City college students who see it as a key source of income? (like my brother does. BTW, he's still gambling online with no problems.)

http://www.sunlightfoundation.com/node/1529

This article shows that the idea Leach lost because of online gambling was actually a myth. If neither Leach's campaign nor Loebsack's campaign saw any evidence of online gambling affecting their polling, finances, or volunteer efforts, then why would anyone believe gambling shaped this election. The only evidence if any campaign money from gamblers was a $2,300 check to Loebsack's campaign. While this was indeed a low-spending affair (Leach spent the least cah of any losing incumbent), it's doubtful 2k  made the difference.

Bingo. Did we really need an entire thread when one sentence would suffice?

Don't question the BTRD, we don't know how it will react.

It probably caused resentment towards him, but I don't think it was the one thing that got him kicked out.
