politicalreform.ie seat projection:

FF 56
FG 44
SF 28
Ind/Oth 20
Lab 10

On these numbers, a grand coalition would seem to be the only viable prospect.

I see some of our TDs are doing their best to promote irony.

I might need to seek help because I think I'm actually developing a kind of grudging respect for Enda Kenny.

It's uncanny how he resembles Bertie Ahern in that picture. Please tell me I'm not the only one to see a ressemblance.

I'm bumping this thread just to post what might be the worst article ever published in a 'newspaper of record'

(FTR, the incident this person is referring is him being slightly too late to avoid a parking fine, not paying it and ending up in jail for two hours)

A poll in today's Irish Times ends an unusually active month in polling with all the main companies releasing data.

Election  RedC    B&H    MBMRBI
201116/921/928/9   1/10
Fine Gael3627252826
Labour19101110  6
Fianna Fáil   1723212722
Sinn Féin1017181923
Green  2  4  3  2
Ind/Other1523231521

That 6% registered today for Labour - a 25 year polling low - raises existential questions for pretty much all the entire parliamentary party. Eamon Gilmore is now more disapproved of than approved of by Labour party voters.

FG remain the party with the most support, but on these figures they would lose a significant share of their TDs.

What would be a plausible Government if those figures actually happened in an election?  The most obvious options look like a FF/FG "grand coalition" between FF and FG or one of them inviting Sinn Féin in, but wouldn't either of those be, well, a bit controversial?

First poll out since the announcement earlier this week from the Government committing to holding a referendum on same-sex marriage in 2015...

They should do a similar poll like that for Abortion with Party support also given (or have they done that already?).

Smiley Wonderful poll. For all the vast problems with this country we're at least making progress on some things.

They should do a similar poll like that for Abortion with Party support also given (or have they done that already?).

It's unfortunately still a minority although polls show a solid 40ish% are "pro-choice" while huge majorities, at least, favour the "rape/incest" allowances popular among the US right. It's not much but it's still evidence that the public is far ahead of the political class on this so I'm vaguely hopeful we'll see some progress on the issue. After all, the idea of utterly overwhelming support for same-sex marriage would have seemed laughable not too long ago.

It's not too surprising in such a religious country.
Does Labour allow conscience votes on Abortion issues or do they whip their members?

Calling modern Ireland a religious country really kind of misses the mark these days although the abortion opposition is certainly a lingering cultural relic of generations of Catholic indoctrination.

The whip was enforced during the recent abortion vote, as far as I remember every member of the party voted for it although Colm "Please give me attention" Keaveney, who resigned from the party a few months back either voted against it or threatened to (I can't be bothered to Google and find out).

The abortion bill was so astoundingly restrictive that it was fairly ridiculous if entirely unsurprising that even the "anti-abortion" TDs voted against it.

As Lewis points out there is any referendum in Ireland with few exceptions a big swing to the 'no change' option during the campaign. However, the poll is an excellent sign.

Also can people commenting on this please not refer to ridiculous cliches about the country which barely have any resemblance in fact these days? And no, Wikipedia knowledge is not knowledge.

Calm down you 11th son of a potato farmer you. Jesus, Mary and the saints be praised. Don't you know that 'Ireland In The Head' is a great American tradition? It's what makes people get drunk on St Patrick's Day. It's what make men like Chad Zapowski desperately seek his Irish roots. It's what makes people get pidgin Gaelic tribal tatoos. It's what allows people to make vague cultural and religious appeals to heritage so they justify being assholes (or should that be arse-holes?)

It's unfortunately still a minority although polls show a solid 40ish% are "pro-choice"

My recollection is that the numbers varied from the high 20s to the high 30s depending on what way the question was phrased.

It's not too surprising in such a religious country.

Calling modern Ireland a religious country really kind of misses the mark these days

By European standards it still is a religious country; estimates of regular church attendance (couple of times a month or more often) are in the mid- to high 40s. The recent European Social Studies survey gave weekly church attendance at 53% but that estimate is definitely on the high side.

Although those same "generations of Catholic indoctrination" seem to have been totally ineffectual where views on gay marriage are concerned.
