The case is this:

San Jose had a population of 895.000 on Census Day 2000 (April 1). The federal Census Bureau estimated the population of the city at 930.000 as of July 1, 2006 while the California Department of Finance put it at 974.000 by January 1, 2007.

This translates into a annual growth rate of 0.6% for the Census Bureau Estimate and 1.3% for the CA Dept. of Finance. So under the low growth scenario of the Census Bureau the city wonīt reach the 1 Million by 2010, but under the higher CA Dept. of Finance it would.

What do you think ? Which estimate is more likely ?

Most people probably have no idea how big San Jose is. Larger than the much more well known San Francisco or Oakland, of course, and bigger than Detroit now.

I voted yes, I think they can get to one million.

Yes, itīs pretty depressing how Detroit is going down in population. Who would have thought in 1950 that Las Vegas or Austin will overtake Detroit at one point in the future ?

Detroit back then had 2 Mio. inhabitants while Las Vegas had 25.000 and Austin about 100.000 and both cities are about to overtake Detroit sometime in the next 20 years.

As much as I'd love for this to happen, it may not (high housing prices)

No, not for the Census.  I imagine that the California Department of Finance number is probably inflated by people who work in San Jose (and thus have payroll taxes collected there) but live someplace more affordable.

I'm a San Jose resident, I'm typing this right now in San Jose, and I say no. Construction in San Jose proper has had a downturn.

No.

Too many small cities around SJ trying to expand for this to happen.  Evil Suburbs you know.

Probably not. Suburbs, as other have said, and the housing crisis will hit San Jose's growth rate hard.

I said yes, but it will definitely be at 1 million by 2011 or 2012.
