It will be quite amusing if Nebraska ends up with two Democratic senators.

They had two until 1997 with Kerrey and Jim Exon.

Kerrey was a major Freedom Fighter.  He even voted against the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996.

It would be great to get Kerrey back in the saddle. We really need him to help us advance real progressive change. Nelson seems to be a republican running on a dem ticket because he lost the GOP nomination.

What does Chuck Hagel have to say about all this?

He'll probably hold a confusing press conference and then just stay silent.

I'm mixed on a Kerrey bid. Read this: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/8/24/124053/185

From the article, it seems like he's more to left of Nelson on every issue but Iraq/War on Terror, which we're not exactly sure where he stands. So, he'd be an improvement on Hagel in every way but maybe Iraq.

The question is: Do we want another Joe Lieberman? Lieberman votes to the left of Nelson too, but he undermines the party more. If I had to choose one to be chucked, it'd be Lieberman.

What does Chuck Hagel have to say about all this?

He says that he will reach a conclusion on when to run for reelection in October 2008. Tongue

Connecticut could elect someone better for the party than Lieberman. Kerrey is easily the best Senator Nebraska could elect.

My only concern with Hagel potentially retiring is that if a Republican replaces him, he/she will definitely be to the right of Hagel.

Besides Iraq, Hagel is pretty far to the right as it is.

Something the Democrats talking about how much they like him often miss.

Given that Iraq is pretty much a litmus test for the Democrats right now, I don't think it's so much missing it as it is willfully ignoring it.

Kerrey hasn't run for senate since then though. I'm sure his opponet will use that the play into the fears of Nebraskans who voted for the state DOMA. 70% voted for it and it was written in a way that made sure to ban anything that resembled a civil union(it was ruled unconstitutional by a court but a higher court overturned their ruling unfortunately).

It might not matter because it seems like Nebraskans don't like to talk about politics and would vote for Kerrey just because he's a war veteran and they voted for him before.

Most Nebraskans wouldn't believe he comitted war crimes unless they saw a video or something similar. To be honest I have only made serious attempts to be informed about politics within the last year and don't even know what he is said to have done.

Will voters in Nebraska elect a man who has spent the last few years living in (gasp) New York City?
