My only concern with Hagel potentially retiring is that if a Republican replaces him, he/she will definitely be to the right of Hagel.

Besides Iraq, Hagel is pretty far to the right as it is.

Something the Democrats talking about how much they like him often miss.

Given that Iraq is pretty much a litmus test for the Democrats right now, I don't think it's so much missing it as it is willfully ignoring it.
