In 1984, Reagan's presidency is being threatened by a series of scandals and general poor luck. The Iran-Contra scandal has happened early. Hurricane Josephine has hit the Gulf, devastating much of the American south. And now, the economy seems to be entering a recession once more. Reagan faces a tough opponent: John Glenn. Can he still win?

Reagan: 262
Glenn: 276
Reagan could easily win the election, just a few votes in several states.

Considering the one-shot positioning of Cuban Americans in Hudson County circa 1984, there is little debate in my mind as to whether or not Reagan can carry New Jersey—he would.

And Reagan won New Hampshire by 38 in 1984.  No way in hell would he lose that state.  Probably win Connecticut, Maine, and Vermont against all comers—won by about 20 in each.

New England was different then.

Iconic incumbent President Reagan being defeated by aging astronaut turned mediocre Senator Glenn is completely laughable.

Best case scenario for Glenn, and being generous to Glenn.

Reagan                     402
Glenn                        136

I'm not sure Glenn would have done any better than Mondale did in the PV, although he may have done slightly better in the EV. For one thing, he would have had a shot at Ohio.

This isn't out 1984 though. The Reagan administration's biggest scandal has happened 3 years early, there's been a Katrina type event, and the economy is starting to tank. I'd say that gives the Democrats at least 50/50 odds.
