We all expected this, but what does it mean for the 2008 race?  Will the Governor appoint someone who will run for reelection, or appoint a stopgap option for the next year and a half?

Safe R.  Unless you can coax Risch into some public bathrooms in Boise...

If Risch will be appointed, that will mean he will have been Governor and a U.S. Senator from his state without election to either position.

Yup - unless Craig's "announcement" is that he's running for re-election, of course! Wink

Funny how Craig is run out of town for wanting anonymous gay sex but it's perfectly fine for Vitter to have straight anonymous sex with  prostitutes.

Senator Craig might not say anything about reëlection on Saturday.  Maybe he's simply going to come out of the water closet.

Voters are a fickle (and oft mentally retarded) bunch.

I never realized until today the concept "in public" was so hard to grasp.

In Idaho, the special election is held at the time of the next general election, so the appointee will serve until then, when there will be an election for the remaining 2 months, and another for the full term.

With it almost certain that the seat be held by a Republican, why worry about whether you appoint a candidate for 2008?

Vitter did not plead guilty to anything in any court.

Craig is not resigning because he wanted sex, gay or straight. Craig is resigning because he was unable to handle the aftermath.  It is most definitely true that had he tried to publically fight charges from the beginning he would have had a very good chance of a success. Hey, he made that pre-emptive out-of-the-blue statement in 1982 - and it worked. True, the doubts would have been stronger this time, but as a Republican in Idaho he would still have little to fear. Signing the plea was a disaster.  Still,  I am convinced that even 2 minutes before his public statement in Boise he still could have done smthg to, at least, manage to serve to the end of the term. He finished himself off at the moment he opened his mouth that day: that speach was the most god-awful blunder from the first to the last sentence. Frankly, I am not sure this wasn't a half-deliberate political suicide. Perhaps, he just got tired of the rumors and figured out he couldn't continue being a public figure.

Obviously that is not the reason the troglodytes of Louisiana tolerated Vitter while the troglodytes of Idaho refuse to tolerate Craig.  They don't know or care about whether these acts were 'public' or 'private'.

All they care about is that Craig is a GAY.  Vitter is still a 'man' in their eyes, and thus redeemable, but Craig has been 'feminized', and is thus of no value.  He is irredeemably 'unmanned' like the prison bitch.  Just ask jmfcst if you want to understand the point of view of these troglodytes.

as everyone knows, ive defended bill jefferson.  at the very least ive defended his right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

but im a little amazed that the democrats are eager to run somebody out of town for an (attempted) blowjob in the bathroom.  but alleged corruption, eh that is okay.

at least brtd has been consistent.

Why the hell would Democrats be 'eager' to throw Craig out? I doubt many of them could care less; we know he's going to be replaced by another conservative Republican anyway. There really is no point.

With the possible exception of those actually in his district, what Democrats share that sentiment? As far as I'm aware, most want Jefferson thrown out assuming he's guilty.

I would rather have him stay for political purposes. But I believe it was the republicans who kicked him out. How quick you forget facts.

I'd love to defend Larry Craig.

If he hadn't supported hateful, anti-gay legislation.

You know full and well that not a single Democrat on the board has defended Jefferson.  YOU are the only one who has.

Not only that, the vast majority of Democrats on here do not believe that Craig has done anything that warrants resignation.

Nice job on the hacking though.

That's a pretty horrible indictment of Democrats on here.

What's wrong with tapping one's foot in a bathroom stall? That's basically all he did.
