President: Kennedy wins by 0.52 (50.26/49.74)

Governor: Dalton (D) wins by 16.06 (58.03/41.97)

And here's the swing map for the difference between Kennedy's percentage and Dalton's percentage

Dalton (D-Kennett) did get a higher percentage in some of SEMO due to his roots there. But Dalton won Reynolds County by 28 points and Nixon won there by 4 points. LBJ carried Reynolds County by a 78/22 margin.

As we can see here, there was a heavy anti-Kennedy swing in the Presidential results from 1956 to 1960 in some parts:

So yes.. the number of anti-Kennedy Democrats in Missouri is.. interesting.

Anti-Catholicism...?

Though then again voting for Governor and President are two different things...

Could be slight anti-Catholicism, although I think the heaviest anti-Al Smith swings in Missouri were in a Southwest and South Central MO.

I also have a copy of the county results of Edward Long/Lon Hocker for the US Senate. Long won 53/47 there, so we'd have to see how big some of the swings were for that election.

Though 1956 itself was somewhat of an oddity for Missouri, the only time that it has not voted with the EV winner since 1900.

The difference between 1952, 1956, and 1960 might be tied to voter turnout, with a drop (at least statewide) in 1956.
