Filing calendar

Quote
You must be logged in to read this quote.

26 hours to see how many people file for Governor (19 filed in 2003, 11 in 1999, 16 in 1995, 12 in 1991, and 8 in 1987).

Plus, there's other statewide offices. So the drama will be "Which Democrat will bother to run for Secretary of State, or Treasurer, or Insurance Commissioner"

Also, there'll be the drama of "Will Ray Nagin lose his mind and run for Governor"

The database of candidates is here: http://www400.sos.louisiana.gov/cgibin/?rqstyp=cndINQ&rqsdta=start

Let the fun begin.

in a shocker, Dardenne is the first to file. Granted, he's the secretary of state, and candidates are supposed to qualify at the Secretary of State's office. We'll all keep you posted on future candidates.

Much more importantly, it all but guarantees Jindal gets to 50% in the first round.

Here are the list of candidates from the Louisiana Sec. of State's site:

B. Alexandrenko, Other (Hope For American Party)
Walter J. Boasso, Democrat
Foster Campbell, Democrat
Vincent Mark Castillo, No Party
Sheldon Forest, No Party
Anthony "Tony G" Gentile, Other (I know he is Ind. Not sure why he is listed as Other.)
John Georges, No Party
T. Lee Horne, III, Libertarian
"Bobby" Jindal, Republican
M. V. "Vinny" Mendoza, Democrat
Arthur D. "Jim" Nichols, No Party
Hardy Parkerson, Democrat
Mary Volentine Smith, Democrat

Boasso and Georges both left the Republican Party as a result of their endorsement of Jindal without giving other Republican candidates a chance to seek it. On the other hand, Treasurer John Kennedy switched from Dem. to Rep. Georges actually polled higher as an Independent than a Republican.

To my knowledge, Horne is the only Libertarian running in the state, even the the party is now an officially recognized party in the state. I know the Constitution Party is running a candidate (Mike Ecuyer) in a House election. I don't know of any other third party candidates running. Most people listed as Other are really independent.

Someone, I think Alexandreko, says she plans to pardon Former Governor Edwin Edwards. She ran as a Democrat in 95, and Reform in 99.

I am leaning towards Jindal needing a run-off to win.

Why didn't any Democrat challenge turncoat Treasurer Kennedy?  Was there not enough time after he switched parties to file?  Is there a signature requirement?

Kennedy was thinking about switching for a while. There is no signature requirement but there may be a qualifying fee.

Because he'd be virtually impossible to beat?

Now, given that 12 candidates will be challenging Jindal, T. Lee Horne could theoretically make it to a run-off with Jindal by only getting ~5%. But, it's not going to happen, unfortunately.

for Lt. Governor (vs Landrieu): Norris "Spanky" Gros (Ind)

You know, I'd be sorely tempted to vote for anyone named "Spanky Gros" just for the amusement factor.

I'm not usually one to write off Democrats' chances in any Southern state, providing they run suitable candidates, but Louisiana is not making it difficult for me to fall all out of love with it nowadays Sad

Believe me if I can fall out of love with Georgia, LA's got no chance

Mary Landrieu's re-election in 2008, of course, will go some way towards redeeming itself in my eyes
